Nikon has pulled back the curtains on its latest high-end camera, the Nikon D800, and its hardcore specs are sure to please photographers and videographers alike.
The D800 features a 36.3-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor, a 91,000-pixel RGB Matrix Metering System and Advanced Scene Recognition System, the capability to record full HD 1080p video, and, finally, a 51-point AF system for high quality images.
The D800 will also feature support for USB 3.0 (and, of course USB 2.0 at slower transfer rates) with dual CF and SD card slots. Videographers will especially like the camera’s ability to send uncompressed video straight to a monitor via HDMI out.
“The D800 is the right tool for today’s creative image makers, affording photographers, filmmakers and videographers a versatile option for capturing the ultimate in still image quality or full HD content, with maximum control,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing at Nikon.
The Nikon D800 is expected to be made available by the end of March and will run for around $3,000. Nikon will also be releasing an alternative model, the D800E, which will “effectively enhance the resolution characteristics of the 36.3-megapixel CMOS sensor by cancelling the anti-aliasing properties of the OLPF inside the camera.” The D800E will be available in April and will set you back $3,300.
