On Jan. 17, 1962 a comedian was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, known to millions of fans the world over as Jim Carrey at the time of his birth he was called James Eugene Carrey.
Fifty years later and Jim Carrey is considered one of Hollywood’s biggest success stories with movies that have raised billions of dollars for the studios he has helped support.
Over his long career which began in the 1980’s but broke out in the 1990’s Carrey has brought us comedy hits that include the Ace Ventura: Pet Detective movies, Dumb & Dumber, Bruce Almighty, Liar Liar and Man on the Moon along with more subtle non-comedic hits including the Truman Show.
Getting his first big break on In Living Color the funnyman soon became a house hold name after appearing in a string of hits while also battling a less public bout of depression and anxiety.

In celebration of his achievements WENN compiled a list of some crazy Jim Carrey moments, here are a few of the best finds:
- In France he is referred to as the son of legendary comic actor Jerry Lewis.
- Carrey failed an audition to star on U.S. comedy show Saturday Night Live after he was left shaken when he saw an NBC employee trying to jump off the roof of a building shortly before the casting.
- To calm him down at school, teachers would allow the hyperactive youngster a 10-minute session at the end of each day to perform in front of his classmates.
- Carrey has dual citizenship – in 2004 he was granted an American passport, while he remains a citizen of his native Canada.
