As we posted a several days ago, Gorilla Glass 2 was going to be showed off at CES 2012. Well, it seems it is and the company behind it, Corning, is glad to let people know what’s better about this second generation of incredibly strong glass which is primarily for mobile devices.
Gorilla Glass 2 comes in at 20% thinner, yet while being thinner, doesn’t sacrifice strength. It will allow manufacturers to keep their slim and sleek designs while also boosting strength.
“We knew Corning Gorilla Glass could get even better. So in response to our customers’ drive toward thinner form factors, we designed this new glass to enable meaningful reduction in thickness without sacrificing the outstanding glass performance for which Gorilla Glass has become highly recognized,” Corning senior vice president and general manager James Steiner said in a statement.”
As the popularity of smartphones increase, especially this year at an incredible rate, so does the chance of potentially damaging them. Electronic gadgets have always been known to be fragile and Gorilla Glass 2 will give consumers peace of mind.
Whereas the display on the iPhone will easily crack or scratch if dropped, this glass from Corning will prevent both which will end up saving people money in the long run, particularly those who may be a bit on the clumsy side. Hey, it happens to the best of us whether it’s dropping your phone on the sidewalk or, well, accidentally dropping your phone in the toilet.
Gorilla Glass has been out since 2007 and is used in over 575 devices from more than 30 companies.
