If you have ever wondered what outer space sounds like, now you can listen for yourself thanks to NASA. NASA’s Soundcloud channel features a collection of recorded sounds taken throughout space and from popular space missions. From the sounds of rockets firing their engines, to a chorus of radio waves bouncing through Earth’s atmosphere, the sound waves are both beautiful and somewhat terrifying.
NASA’s Soundcloud profile is setup to feature sounds from historic spaceflights as well as more newly documented sounds from across space.
“Here’s a collection of NASA sounds from historic spaceflights and current missions. You can hear the roar of a space shuttle launch or Neil Armstrong’s ‘One small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind’ every time you get a phone call if you make our sounds your ringtone. Or, you can hear the memorable words ‘Houston, we’ve had a problem,’ every time you make an error on your computer.”
Though the historical sound bites are a large part of human space history, the sounds from the “Solar System and Beyond” are some of the most interesting on the whole site. Tracks featured in this section include the sounds of lightening on Jupiter and a chorus of radio waves in Earth’s atmosphere.
Amazingly, we now have sound recordings from interstellar space thanks to Voyager I. The Voyager I made it into interstellar space and has since experienced three separate “Tsunami Waves.” According to Lake County News , these “Waves” occur “when the sun emits a coronal mass ejection, throwing out a magnetic cloud of plasma from its surface. This generates a wave of pressure. When the wave runs into the interstellar plasma – the charged particles found in the space between the stars – a shock wave results that perturbs the plasma.”
The resulting sound of the disturbed plasma is quite eerie.
