Nuance confirmed on Tuesday that they have purchased mobile platform Swype for $100 million. Nuance currently owns the rights to the T9 keyboard system which will now add full QWERTY capabilities to their lineup.
By purchasing Swype the company now becomes the default provider for custom keyboard layouts on many phones. Swype and Nuance T9 technologies are used on phones ranging from basic mobile phones to Google Android based devices.
News of the buyout arrives just after Nuance is believed to have signed a deal for the iPhone 4S system to power the voice recognition system behind Siri. The buyout would mean that Nuance now controls major components of Google Android and Apple iOS systems.
Comments from Nuance and Swype have not been provided at this time although we expect to hear more about the buyout in the coming days.
Are you surprised that Nuance aquired Swype?
