The TMNT rap single from the upcoming movie has certainly brought the cheese you would expect from a film of this type. With Michael Bay at the helm, we can expect everything about it to be over the top, and the soundtrack to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is proving to be just that.

Previous songs made for Turtles movies have included efforts from noted rapper Vanilla Ice, who not only provided the title track to the sequel, but also performed it in a cameo. Partners in Kryme were the first to provide the theme song to one of the films, using electronic voices with a heavy beat and an epic background to generate excitement.

Vanilla Ice’s take on the theme song brought a level of cheesiness that made it memorable decades later, combining his star power with the repeated phrases “Ninja, ninja rap,” and “Go ninja go ninja go!” It even used his trademark of showing himself off at the beginning and made a short comeback to promote a new shape of Kraft macaroni and cheese.

The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rap single comes from the collaboration of popular rappers and electronic mixers, combining their talents to give it the energy we’ve come to expect from Eastman and Laird’s property. Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa, and Ty Dolla $ign start their version with the heavy distorted sounds of rap’s bigger acts, bordering on dubstep with its electronic sound. As soon as they drop the lyrics, “Knock knock, you about to get shell shocked,” you know the pizza toppings are about to fly through your speakers because it just oozes with cheese.

The sound coming from this song can be traced back to the days of Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins, when distorted bass became the new norm. It’s nice to know that Michael Bay isn’t simply recycling Linkin Park any more, and is willing to market the music toward the audience it’s always been aimed at.
