The Atlanta Braves have a 54-38 record, and that puts them squarely in second in the National League East. They are likely in second due to just a 17-16 record against their four divisional opponents, but they did go 10-5 in interleague play. Currently they are 3.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies, who they have a 6-6 record against to this point in the season. They may be on the rise as they were six games out at the end of June.
The Braves offense has scored 365 runs on 736 hits. That is the third worst hit total in the senior league, and a indication that this team may be lacking some offense. They do not lack power as they have hit 97 home runs, which is the fourth best total in the NL. Braves hitters have struck out 711 times, and drawn 295 walks. That strike out total is third most among the 16 clubs in their league, and should be a major concern for this team.
The pitching staff has surrendered 312 runs on 730 hits. The staff ERA is 3.12 and all of those numbers rank among the best in the NL. Braves pitchers have struck out 735 hitters and issued just 275 walks. Of course, the staff is being led by Jair Jurrjens who already has 12 wins and a 1.87 ERA. As a Detroit Tigers fan that trade for Edgar Renteria really hurts me, but was clear genius for the Braves. Their bullpen looks to be pretty good, and their closer has converted 28 saves.
The Braves need to get Dan Uggla out of his slump. He is hitting just .185, and while his power numbers are ok, they need him to be on base a little more. Of course, they do have three other batters hitting in the low .200’s and that means some offense needs to be added at the trade deadline.
