Lana Del Rey is officially a member of the Platinum club.
Although it originally arrived on store shelves back in 2012, the singer’s acclaimed album Born to Die kept selling copies as word of mouth about the record spread among music enthusiasts. According to Idolator , the second album from Lana Del Rey spent 112 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Over two years after its debut, the singer has officially sold one million copies of Born to Die . Nielsen SoundScan reports that the album recently moved an additional 5,000 copies, pushing its official total to 1,001,000. In other words, the singer has a Platinum record on her hands.
Although the songs dropped several positions on the April 5 chart — from 59 to 76 — Billboard notes that the album hasn’t fallen out of the Billboard 200 since arriving in January of 2012. Regardless of how you feel about Lana Del Rey and her musical endeavors, you have to admit that this is a very impressive feat.
While radio stations largely avoided Lana Del Rey’s music, the singer found plenty of success online. Her official Vevo channel has millions of views, while her SoundCloud account has racked up plenty of listens. Her continued success illustrates how an artist can find plenty of success without breaking into Top 40 radio with a slew of hit singles.
The “Video Games” singer issued an EP and the trippy short film Tropico last year, though fans are anxiously awaiting the arrival of her next full-length record. Ultraviolence , an album that borrows a term coined by A Clockwork Orange , should arrive later this year.
The Inquisitr reported that Lana Del Rey recently scheduled several shows to help build plenty of buzz for the record’s eventual release. In the process, she broke ticket sales records in Phoenix in Las Vegas.
“I can count on one hand how many artists have sold out in one day at Comerica Theatre, and none of them did it faster than Lana Del Rey,” Live Nation said in a statement.
