According to a report by Sky News, a suspected “key member” of the notorious hacking group LulzSec was arrested in a joint operation by the FBI and Scotland Yard.
The suspect, 19, was arrested in Essex under charges of from the Computer Misuse Act and Fraud Act days after the group launched a distributed denial of service attack on the CIA.gov website, taking it down for several hours. Just yesterday, LulzSec and Anonymous hacktivists teamed up to announce full-on war against all governments, banks and big corporations all over the world.
Here’s what a spokesperson from the Scotland Yard had to say about the arrest:
“The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial of service attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.”
Police reportedly confiscated a “significant” amount of material from a residence in Essex, and police are currently running said evidence through forensic examination.
According to a member of Anonymous, however, the suspect arrested wasn’t a key member at all. The Anon tweeted:
“The good news everybody: Ryan has little to do with #LulzSec besides running IRC. All 6 members of @LulzSec are fine and safe.” #AntiSec
Key member or not, this turn of events will undoubtedly shake things up a bit, one way or another.
