Bette Midler will sing at this year’s Oscar Awards ceremony for the first time, according to an announcement from the Academy on Wednesday.
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said “We are thrilled to have Bette perform on the Oscars for the very first time. We believe she will make our Oscar telecast an especially moving evening.”
The announcement did go into any details about what Midler, 68, would be singing or where her performance would be included into the ceremony which will take place on March 2, and be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.
Bette Midler is not exactly a stranger to award ceremonies; she was twice nominated for an Oscar for her roles in The Rose (1980) and For the Boys (1991).
Unfortunately, Bette has never actually won an Oscar, but she has received many other awards in a career spanning almost 50 years.
These include three Grammy awards, four Golden Globes, three Emmy awards and a special Tony award.
Midler has sold over 30 million albums which include 13 Gold, 8 Platinum, and 4 Multiplatinum.
It was only 15 years after she began her singing career that she decided to enter the movie business. Bette’s first film — The Rose — was the one for which she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress in 1980.
Two months ago, HBO announced that Bette Midler would portray the legendary Mae West in a film to be directed by William Friedkin with the screenplay written by Harvey Fierstein.
