American Airlines is switching out 6,000 in-flight entertainment systems with the Samsung 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab complete with a customized version of the Android Honeycomb OS.
The customization to the tablet will allow the units to showcase American Airlines’ own offerings such as streaming services, while also offering expanded memory on the devices, although the latter is still only a rumor.
At this time only “premium cabins” appear to be receiving the upgrade and only then on long-distance routed airplanes, for example, the units should be seen on many 767-200 models with WiFi access .
Users should expect to pay an additional premium to take advantage of the tablets.
