Arcade Fire Movie Creates Unintended Buzz

Grammy winning band Arcade Fire recently teamed up with director Spike Jonze to create “Scenes from the Suburbs,” a 30 minute film inspired by 80’s flicks such as Goonies and Red Dawn.

In the film, a group of bored, harmless teens squander their time away in a typical American neighborhood in the presence of atypical daily suburb activities. For example, in one scene a “shady military guy” drags a civilian to the street and executes him in the presence of kids riding their bikes nearby.

Naturally, reports have been made linking brutish soldiers in the film to agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Arcade Fire however, dismisses that idea. Win Butler, the band’s lead singer, says that the future setting for the film wasn’t intended to serve as some sort of chilling vision of what’s to come.

“It wasn’t like: ‘The world is going to hell, and this is the hell we’ll be in in 25 years.’ It was more like, let’s make a sci-fi movie. Oh, what’s a plausible path that this could take?”

Scenes from the Suburbs makes it’s Canadian debut at the Toronto Film Festival this week. In the meantime, the rest of us can check out the trailer for the short-film below:
