Katy Perry On Religion: I’m Not Buddhist, Hindu, Or Christian

Katy Perry wants everyone to know that she doesn’t subscribe to any organized beliefs when it comes to religion. However, this doesn’t mean she isn’t connected deeply with God.

The “Roar” singer discussed a number of topics during her chat with Marie Claire magazine . In addition to talking about her brief breakup with John Mayer and her marriage to Russell Brand, Perry dished on her religious beliefs. Expect mild controversy to ensue.

When it comes to a higher power, Katy Perry revealed that she doesn’t buy into organized religion. However, the singer said she firmly believes there’s something big and powerful up there that keeps us accountable for our actions. Just don’t ask her to subscribe to theories surrounding heaven and hell.

“I don’t believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne. I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable. Accountability is rare to find, especially with people like myself, because nobody wants to tell you something you don’t want to hear,” Perry explained.

She continued, “I actually don’t trust people who start to turn on me because they get scared of telling me the truth. I’m not Buddhist, I’m not Hindu, I’m not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time — for self-control, for humility. There’s a lot of gratitude in it.”

Although she gained worldwide fame for her revealing outfits and the controversial single “I Kissed a Girl,” Katy Perry started out as a gospel singer. During her chat with Rolling Stone in 2010, the singer admitted that she no longer believes everything she reads in the Bible.

“God is very much still a part of my life. But the way the details are told in the Bible — that’s very fuzzy for me. And I want to throw up when I say that. But that’s the truth,” Perry said.

The singer added, “I still believe that Jesus is the son of God. But I also believe in extraterrestrials, and that there are people who are sent from God to be messengers, and all sorts of crazy stuff. I look up into the sky and I’m just mindf***ed — all those stars and planets, the never-endingness of the universe.”

While Katy Perry’s latest album Prism features the song “By the Grace of God,” fans shouldn’t read too much into the title. Although she believes there’s a higher power watching over us, it’s doubtful that the singer is returning to her faith-based roots anytime soon.
