As T-Mobile continues to expand its LTE service into new markets, it has also had to try and boost the speed of its data network in order to compete with the likes of AT&T and Verizon, which have continuously boasted faster LTE data speeds.

The carrier will now be utilizing its acquisition of MetroPCS in order to enhance its LTE service by using MetroPCS’s spectrum. Many of T-Mobile’s customers will not notice any difference in their LTE service (at least for the time being) since the faster speeds are only being rolled out in Dallas, Texas to start. After Dallas, the carrier should be able to expand into new markets, but it has yet to release a timeline for when other cities can expect the enhanced LTE speeds.

Hey, North Dallas T-Mobile customer — that speedier Internet connection isn’t a figment of your imagination. Just before Thanksgiving, the carrier silently got the ball rolling on its plans to unleash a faster LTE network. To achieve this upgrade, Deutsche Telekom combined its LTE spectrum with that of MetroPCS, which it acquired for $1.5 billion earlier this year. – T-Mobile

Up until now, the vast majority of the carrier’s customers have been unhappy with its LTE speed. Although new markets are being added on a consistent basis, LTE simply is not as good on T-Mobile as it is on Verizon or AT&T. Using MetroPCS’s spectrum will surely boost speeds, but it will take quite a bit of time before the carrier can actually bring the improved LTE service to all of its markets.

T-Mobile continues to find innovative ways to push the competitive landscape in the cell phone business that is dominated by behemoths like AT&T. This year it pushed the envelope with no-contract upgrade plans and free international roaming. Now if the company can bring speeds to compete with the bigger rivals, it will be a no-brainer for consumers to start switching. – T-Mobile
