If you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of internet users who tuned into William & Kate’s royal wedding at Westminster Abbey in the wee hours, you weren’t alone.
The massive event drew crowds of over 300,000 near the site of the ceremony- which, according to Mashable , is about how many viewers concurrently watched the festivities on Livestream as of 6 am Eastern Time on Friday. Max Haot, CEO of the company, estimated that 2 million viewers would log on by the time the festivities included.
Akamai says the event outpaced the globally huge World Cup stats last summer:
Akamai reports that the event broke broader live streaming records as well. A representative for the company — whose network hosts some of the web’s largest news sites — reports that “concurrent live streams of Royal Wedding on Akamai surpassed the 1.6M peak set by World Cup in June of 2010.”
The event also surpassed the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama in January of 2010 in number of web viewers.
