Game of Thrones actor David Bradley has joined Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming FX series, The Strain .

The series is based on the best-selling vampire trilogy of the same name by del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

Bradley will play Professor Abraham Setrakian , a Holocaust survivor turned New York pawn shop owner, who may have answers about a viral outbreak that appears to be linked to vampirism. The role was originally held by John Hurt, but he left the series for unknown reasons. His scenes in the pilot will be re-shot.

Corey Stoll stars as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, an epidemiologist and the head of the CDC Canary Team who is charged with containing the virus before it spreads. When it does, he and his team, as well as regular New Yorkers, have to fight for humanity. The ensemble cast also includes Sean Astin, Natalie Brown, Mia Maestro, Kevin Durand, Richard Sammel, Ben Hyland, Miguel Gomez, Robert Maillet, Jack Kesy, and Jonathan Hyde.

FX has ordered 13 episodes of The Strain , which begins production in Toronto later this month. The series is scheduled to premiere in July 2014. Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan will executive produce along with Gary Ungar and Carlton Cuse, who will serve as showrunner.

“We could not be more excited to be moving forward with Guillermo, Carlton and Chuck on The Strain ,” Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, presidents of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said. “This is an epic story with stunning visuals and remarkable acting. The Strain totally reimagines and reinvents the genre.”

David Bradley is best known for his role as Argus Finch in the Harry Potter franchise. He also played Walder Frey in three episodes of Game of Thrones. The 71-year-old English actor has also appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger , Doctor Who , Hot Fuzz, The World’s End , and Broadchurch.
