Twitter announced Tuesday that users will now be able to create their own custom timelines based on different topics, hashtags, and more. Twitter said in a statement that this new feature is to give users “more control over how Tweets are organized and delivered on the Twitter platform.”
According to TechCrunch , this new ability to create custom timelines will allow people to create “powerful streams of information out of Twitter’s public firehose,” allowing anyone to curate individual streams of data. Twitter said the following in a statement:
“Custom timelines are an entirely new type of timeline –– one that you create. You name it, and choose the Tweets you want to add to it, either by hand or programmatically using the API. This means that when the conversation around an event or topic takes off on Twitter, you have the opportunity to create a timeline that surfaces what you believe to be the most noteworthy, relevant Tweets.”
Mashable reported Brian Ellin, product manager for the Twitter platform , saying, “Whether you want to collect the best Tweets about a TV show or help people find the latest information about fast-moving real-time situations, custom timelines let you give everyone a place to follow along.”
What many are finding cool about this new feature is that each timeline will have its own permalink page, which will make it much easier for users to reference their friends and/or followers to each custom timeline. TechCrunch goes on to say that these timelines will also be embeddable.
Twitter did say that the new feature isn’t available to everyone just yet, but they have said that it should be fully functional for everyone in the next few days.
