An explosive device was recently discovered inside a New York Home Depot, according to UPI . Fortunately for all involved, authorities were able to remove the potentially deadly explosive before anyone was seriously injured.
Police were alerted to the presence of the potentially dangerous device on Wednesday, prompting authorities to evacuate the retailer in order to prevent any potential injuries. Before long, a suspicious package was located and safely removed from the premises.
“We are cooperating with authorities on their investigation,” Home Depot said in a recent statement. “The safety of our customers and associates is certainly of the utmost importance to us.”
According to CBS News , the FBI has been investigating the store’s security footage to determine who, precisely, was behind the bomb plot. While a suspect was recently questioned by authorities in regards to a similar incident, there’s currently no enough evidence for an arrest to stick. In the meantime, investigators will continue to pour over security footage and forensic data.
Security expert Sal Lifrieri is convinced that the pipe bomb mastermind, who reportedly demanded $2 million in a letter sent to authorities, is trying to send someone a serious message.
“Clearly the person is motivated to be able to put a device like that in an establishment,” Lifrieri explained when asked about the possibility of an extortion plot. “That could be a potential motive. It could also be someone who was an ex-employee.”
On Monday, a bomb threat was called into a Huntington, New York Home Depot location, forcing a similar evacuation and lots of frazzled nerves. Although police have stated that there’s currently no connection between the two incidents, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reports the bomb plots could be a part of a much bigger scheme, one that could unfold during the holidays.
Presently, authorities and Home Depot officials have refused to comment further on the possibility of a bomb plot.
