It’s been a few years since Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson announced their split and subsequent divorce. Since then, they’ve both moved on to other partners, so now Wentz is opening up about what went wrong within the marriage.
Wentz spoke to Sirius XM radio host Howard Stern about his failing marriage. When Stern asked Pete if he had any idea that the marriage would eventually go south, the Fall Out Boy bassist was candid, and admitted that he didn’t see it coming.
“I thought it was forever. My parents have been married, I think, 35 years. I don’t really know. Forty years, this year, maybe? But no, I didn’t. At the same time, we were both very young.”

Wentz admits that taking time off from his band Fall Out Boy aided to his marriage problems with Simpson. With the loss of the band, Pete was left with no sense of identity and soon lost himself.
“Here’s what it really was: At 31, we’d had all these great years as a band, and then we took time off, and I basically became Mr. Mom,” he said to Stern.
He continued, “I had the beard, the flannel shirt. I didn’t know what my identity was. That factored in. When your identity is what you do, it’s hard when you stop doing it.”
He also admitted that he let himself go because he knew he wasn’t in the public eye as much.
“It was the first time where I was like, ‘Well, no one’s really taking my picture. I’m just basically hanging out with my kid all day. Who cares?’ I think when you stop caring about your personal appearance, your personal hygiene, it makes you even more depressed, but it makes you do it more.”

Fortunately, both Wentz and Simpson have moved on since their 2011 divorce. Currently, the Fall Out Boy member is expecting a baby with model Meagan Camper, and Simpson is expecting with her husband Evan Ross, who is the son of legendary singer Diana Ross. Ashlee and Evan were wed in August, and soon after announced that they were expecting. Pete and Ashlee share custody of their son, Bronx, who is 6 years-old.
