Meredith Vieira’s black eye wasn’t from any sort of physical abuse. Rather, it was from her failure to turn on the light as she made her way to the bathroom when she returned home from a long flight.
On Friday, during an episode of the Today show, Vieira opened up about her shiner and explained exactly she ended up with the massive bruise on her face.
“If you’re going to laugh, I’m not going to tell you [how I got it],” Vieira told host Hoda Kotb, according to Entertainment Tonight, reported via MSN.
The 61-year-old talk show host then went on to explain the circumstances to which she received her black eye, and the lessons she learned from her careless mistake.
“I had to go to the bathroom and I didn’t put the light on,” Meredith explained. “To get to the bathroom, you go through a little dressing room. I just came back from Los Angeles and Spokane to celebrate [my son] Gabe’s 24th birthday. The suitcase is black and the room is black. I fell over the suitcase and I hit my head on the rim of the dressing-room table.”
“If it had been a little bit lower, something bad could have happened — something really bad,” she added.
Just as a precaution, Meredith went on to the doctor to have her head checked out, and on Tuesday, she tweeted an update from the doc. Luckily, after undergoing a CT scan, it was determined that her injuries were only superficial.

Richard Cohen, Meredith’s husband, later shared his version as to what happened on his blog.
“I am the one in my house who has multiple sclerosis. I am the only one who is legally blind. I have limited depth perception and glance off doorways if I am not careful – and I am very cautious – because my lateral perception also is deficient. Yet I survive because I have learned self-preservation,” he wrote. “I am married to a woman who has not. Meredith is a klutz, like a drunken sailor on a bender who collides with stationary objects and is a danger to herself.”
