Former Attorney General Pam Bondi isn’t off the hook, as she still faces pressure to testify before Congress about the Justice Department’s handling of Jeffrey Epstein files.

This comes even after President Donald Trump fired her and appointed Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche as acting attorney general. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has not said yet whether he will enforce the subpoena.

However, members of the committee have stated that Bondi must appear because the subpoena was directed to her personally, not just to her former office.

According to Politico, Bondi’s expected testimony has become a key point in the ongoing battle over the release of Epstein-related records. The Republican-led Oversight Committee subpoenaed Bondi in March after lawmakers from both parties called for answers about delays, redactions, and how the department handled material linked to the federal sex-trafficking investigation.

Lawmakers are seeking sworn testimony as soon as April 14, according to multiple reports on the issue.

Trump announced Bondi’s departure on April 2, praising her publicly and stating that Blanche would step in as acting attorney general and transition to the private sector.

This decision came after months of criticism regarding Bondi’s management of the Epstein records. Despite this, Blanche has denied that the situation led to her removal. In a television interview, he called claims connecting Bondi’s departure to the Epstein fallout “simply not true.”

Nonetheless, Bondi’s tenure at the Justice Department was heavily influenced by the Epstein files. Early in her term, she suggested that key documents were on her desk. Later, she faced backlash when document releases did not meet expectations and included significant redactions. She has also been heavily criticized by Epstein’s victims and currently faces a lawsuit after private information about one of them was not redacted.

Bondi began her tenure as AG by promoting a full release of the Epstein files and did not shy away from implying that there is a ‘client list.’ By mid-2025, there was a shift in the tone of the administration, and Bondi, along with FBI Director Kash Patel and others, said there was nothing to be seen in the Epstein Files.

She later faced accusations from lawmakers of attempting to hide information in the files.

Congress members from both parties have pointed out that a job change does not negate a subpoena. Some lawmakers have publicly warned they still expect her to testify under oath. The focus now shifts to Comer, who has not ruled out forcing compliance if Bondi refuses to testify voluntarily.

Over the next month I will be working tirelessly to transition the office of Attorney General to the amazing Todd Blanche before moving to an important private sector role I am thrilled about, and where I will continue fighting for President Trump and this Administration.…

This matter continues to cast a shadow over the department under Blanche. His arrival has not eased the concerns of lawmakers and advocates who want the remaining Epstein documents released and a complete account of how the records were managed.

Blanche has indicated he wants the department to move on from this issue and he backed Bondi all the way while under her leadership.

After leaving office, Bondi stated that serving as attorney general was “the honor of a lifetime” and thanked Trump for the opportunity. Trump, in his public statement, mentioned that Bondi would take on a new private-sector role to be announced later.

However, on Capitol Hill, her next steps may depend more on whether Congress insists she answer questions under oath about one of Washington’s most politically charged files.
