Kristi Noem has faced a new controversy after her husband, Bryon Noem, was accused of living a secret life of cross-dressing. According to recent reports, the former DHS secretary is now “vulnerable to blackmail” due to her husband’s controversy. Reports about Bryon’s cross-dressing first surfaced last month.
The allegations emerged from photo exchanges and other online interactions. One such image reportedly showed Bryon wearing artificial breasts while pouting at the camera. In addition to the photos, Noem was also accused of interacting with adult entertainers and participating in the “bimbofication” scene. He allegedly sent at least $25,000 in virtual payments to those who requested money from him.

As Kristi Noem continues to navigate the controversy and her own shock, PR expert Lynn Carratt weighed in on what it could mean for the former DHS secretary. “Kristi Noem is facing a more complex storm. Allegations surrounding her husband’s private life are dominating headlines, and crucially, this isn’t just a reputational issue. It leaves her vulnerable to blackmail and risks her security,” Carratt told the Irish Star.
The PR expert noted that the story itself is not the actual “danger,” but rather “how long it’s allowed to run.” Carratt explained, “In situations like this, hesitation is what fuels the fire. A drip-feed of denials, half-statements or ‘no comment’ responses only prolongs the cycle.”
Despite the concerns, Bryon Noem has denied that his actions could pose a real danger to his wife. Meanwhile, the PR expert weighed in on what Kristi should do to avoid the risk of blackmail.
“The most effective crisis strategies tend to be decisive: either firmly draw a line under it as a private family matter, or address it once, clearly, and pivot the conversation back to work,” Carratt said.
The expert added, “What absolutely cannot happen is allowing the narrative to define her. Right now, the risk is that a seasoned political figure is being reduced to a storyline she doesn’t control.” Since the scandal came to light, there have been concerns about how it could affect Noem’s marriage.

Lynn firmly advises against a divorce, insisting that at a time like this, a united front would serve both parties. “As for the inevitable question, could this end in divorce? Possibly. But that, too, would be a calculated move as much as a personal one,” the expert noted.
Lynn explained that while a separation would “create distance and a sense of resolution,” it would also “extend the life of the story and invite even deeper scrutiny.” The expert believes that “the most likely strategy should be unity, privacy, and a swift shift back to public-facing work.”
Following the allegations against Bryon, a spokesperson for Noem told The New York Post, “The family was blindsided by this, and they ask for privacy and prayers at this time.”
