Melania Trump accompanied President Donald Trump earlier this week when they stepped out for a night out on the town at the John F. Kennedy Center. However, thanks to her beaming at the President during his speech, many were dissecting her body language.
The Mirror US reports that the first couple attended the opening night of “Chicago” at the end of March. They were met with boos and applause, which they handled graciously. However, all eyes were on Melania when viewers noted some footage of hers that didn’t seem to align with their perception of her.

They began to speculate about the First Lady in the videos because she was not behaving like herself. What do they say gave it away? Her smile. The online community soon dissected the footage while trying to figure out if it was really Melania beaming while making the rounds with Trump. They seemed to focus on her facial expressions and her appearance, particularly because they thought that her smile was out of character because she is usually reserved when she is in public. Others mocked the situation, and pointed out the many other conspiracy theories surrounding Melania.

The so-called “Melania body double” theory—sometimes referred to as “Fake Melania”—began during Trump’s very first term as President in 2017. The rumors started making the rounds after the Guardian’s reporter Marina Hyde joked that she may have been replaced by an impersonator. She penned, “Absolutely convinced Melania is being played by a Melania impersonator these days. Theory: she left him weeks ago.”
The offhand comment gained steam, and since then, the theory has abounded on the internet. It often resurfaces when Melania makes public appearances when she doesn’t quite seem to act the way the public expects her to.
Recently, netizens have piled onto the “Fake Melania” because she wore sunglasses during the evening or appeared not interested in what was going on around her at events. Those who buy into the theory think that these signs could point to her sending a lookalike in her place.
However, it should also be said that compared to most First Ladies, Melania does not make regular appearances at events. This has also flamed the fans of scrutiny on everything she does.

It must be said that there is no evidence to support the body double claims. Both Melania and Trump have spoken out and said that this was not true, and that she attends the functions herself. In 2018, the president himself called it “fake news” and said that the media was pushing the agenda of Melania’s body double and that they were also manipulating images of his wife. At a later stage, Melania’s spokesperson also said that it was false, and that the claims were distracting people from the work that she was doing.
Part of the reason that Melania may have shown up with Trump at the Kennedy Center is that it is about to be closed for renovations starting from July. The opening night of “Chicago” would be one of the last times to be sighted at the venue before then. Nevertheless, many are convinced that they know Melania by the duration of her smile — or the absence of it altogether.
