It has been two months since Nancy Guthrie went missing. As the investigation continues, experts believe that her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, is finally “coming to terms with possible death.” The expert also believes that Nancy died “early on” in the investigation.

She was last seen on Feb. 1 at her home in Tucson, Arizona. After the 84-year-old woman missed her usual Sunday morning church, she was declared missing. Although a masked intruder was captured on her Ring camera, no suspect or person of interest has been identified so far. With that, it also remains unclear whether Guthrie is alive at all.

Savannah recently went on the Today Show to give an interview on the case. During the interview with former colleague Hoda Kotb, she revealed that initially, the family thought Nancy was not at home due to some medical emergency. “We thought that she must have had some kind of medical episode in the night because the back doors were propped open,” the NBC anchor said.

However, soon, she and the other members of the family came to terms with the fact that the 84-year-old was missing. “Her phone was there, and her purse was there, so it just didn’t make any sense. Annie [Savannah’s sister] had already called all of the hospitals. It was just chaos and disbelief,” said Savannah.

Experts also pointed out that during the interview, she used the past tense while talking about her missing mom. “She was in tremendous pain; her back was very bad. On a good day, she could walk down to the mailbox, so this wasn’t a wander off,” she said. This might be a sign of extreme grief, but it could also suggest that she is finally coming to terms with the fact that her mother might not be alive.

Retired Nassau County lieutenant Michael Gould further weighed in on the case. Speaking to the Irish Star, he said, “Yes — referring to a loved one in the past tense is often an indication that the family is beginning to come to terms with the possibility of death.”

Gould further added, “Based on the facts of this case, it is very likely that Nancy died early on. You have an 84-year-old woman with mobility limitations and a need for life-sustaining medication, and there has been no credible proof of life. Those factors make long-term survival highly unlikely.”

The retired founder of Nassau County’s K-9 unit further added that the Guthrie family could be suffering from a “profound void,” adding that in such cases, “the uncertainty is often worse than death.”
