A patient who refused to leave a Florida hospital for months after being discharged has finally left the property, also bringing an unusual legal case to an end.

The Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida has confirmed that the woman who had remained in her room since October 2025, is no longer living at the hospital. In addition to this, the hospital has also ended the lawsuit it initially filed against her.

According to People, a TMH representative has updated the media on the legal case. On March 31, a rep shared, “TMH can confirm that this legal case is no longer active, and the person is no longer at TMH.” However, the officials did not share the information about where the woman went or how she agreed to her departure.

The patient had been formally discharged by the hospital on October 6, 2025. The doctors informed her that she no longer needed acute medical care. However, she refused to leave her room, which led the hospital to take legal action to remove her.

According to the court documents, the staff tried multiple times to help her leave safely. “TMH staff made repeated efforts to assist the defendant in safely completing discharge,” the hospital mentioned in the complaint.

In addition to this, the officials said they offered her other forms of support. “TMH offered assistance, including coordination with family members and offering non-emergency medical transportation to obtain necessary identification,” the complaint says. “TMH has limited inpatient beds … The defendant’s continued occupancy prevents use of the bed for patients needing acute care,” it added. The complaint also mentioned that her “continued presence” was taking up resources and staff time.

The case drew enough attention from the public because such incidents happen rarely in the U.S. hospitals. Facilities sometimes struggle to discharge patients who lack housing, identification or family support. However, if the patient still does not leave the premises, the case can lead to legal disputes.

A court hearing in the case was scheduled, but later cancelled. The hospital filed a notice to dismiss the lawsuit after the woman left Room 373.

Talking about the case, healthcare experts say prolonged stays by discharged patients can strain the already stretched systems. Hospitals rely on bed turnover to treat new patients, especially during emergency and critical cases.

While the issue has been resolved, the case is an example of the challenges in patient discharge planning. It also raises questions about how hospitals handle patients who are facing social or logistical barriers after getting care.
