Noelia Castillo, 25, died by euthanasia last week. She was a s–ual assault victim, and Donald Trump is demanding answers from Spain for permitting her assisted suicide. The administration has expressed “serious concerns” over “many systemic human rights failures” of the Spanish government that led to Castillo’s euthanasia.

According to a leaked diplomatic cable, obtained by the New York Post, the State Department ordered the U.S. Embassy in Madrid to open an investigation into Spain’s handling of the woman, who was repeatedly attacked and gang raped.

Trump’s concerns stem largely from the fact that Castillo, who sought euthanasia, reportedly “expressed hesitancy” in her last hours. The cable, leaked on Tuesday, reads, “We are deeply concerned by allegations that Ms. Castillo was repeatedly s–ually assaulted while under state care and that no perpetrators have been brought to justice.”

The cable continued, “We are also aware of reports that Ms. Castillo expressed hesitancy to undergo euthanasia in her final hours, but that these indications were ignored. This case raises serious concerns about the application of Spain’s euthanasia law, particularly in cases involving psychiatric conditions and non-terminal suffering.”

The State Department suggested that Spain’s immigration laws were to blame for the multiple assaults on Castillo.

“We are investigating allegations that the s–ual assault of Ms. Castillo was perpetrated by individuals of a migration background. Mass and illegal migration is a human rights concern, and Spain’s facilitation of mass and illegal migration represents a dangerous threat to the rights and liberties of Spanish citizens, as well as broader regional and global security,” the diplomatic cable added.

According to the Post, Castillo had suffered repeated s–ual assaults before she turned 21. She had previously attempted suicide, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. On Thursday, she died by euthanasia under Spain’s right-to-die law, which was passed in 2021. Her father, Geronimo Castillo, battled for years trying to legally block her assisted suicide after she was approved for euthanasia in 2024.

Earlier this month, her father lost his 18-month battle after the European Court of Human Rights ruled in Castillo’s favor. Geronimo accused the Spanish State of “abandoning” the young woman who was suffering from extreme trauma due to what happened.

In a final interview before her death, Castillo said, “My father saw me fall and couldn’t do anything. But after everything he’s done, I don’t feel sorry for him anymore. He hasn’t respected my decision, and he never will.”

“None of my family is in favor of euthanasia. But what about all the pain I’ve suffered during all these years? The happiness of a father, a mother, or a sister cannot be more important than the life of a daughter,” she said.
