JD Vance seems to have landed in fresh trouble, all thanks to his “follow Trump” mentality. The vice president, who is known to put his boss before everything else, has now ended up inviting criticism. The National Catholic Reporter recently published a detailed report in which Vance was accused of choosing MAGA over Jesus. The reaction comes after the U.S. vice president’s take on the killing of nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota by federal agents.
There aren’t any second thoughts about the extent of how far JD Vance is willing to go when it comes to abiding by each and every word of Donald Trump. Not only do the two have each other’s back, but it seems the vice president is even willing to give up his religious faith in order to match footsteps with the 79-year-old president. As a result, the Catholic organization has suggested that he might have abandoned his own religion for the sake of MAGA.
The newspaper further posed a very direct choice for Vance when it comes to his master: it can either be the Lord Jesus Christ or Donald Trump. One of the stinging lines in the published op-ed read, “In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus famously proclaimed, ’No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. As the country continues to reel from the fallout over the shooting of Alex Pretti, Catholics are making it clear who they are choosing to serve. It isn’t always Jesus.”

The Catholic commentary went on to condemn Vance, who has ended up politicizing Alex Pretti’s death. By doing so, he has failed to embody Catholic values of mercy, healing and human dignity. They have even termed Vance’s conduct on the whole matter a moral stain on Catholicism. Well, the ICE agents’ killing of nurse Pretti was characterized as a matter of self-defense by the Trump administration. They claimed that the man had a firearm in his hand, which provoked the agents to take the step of firing on him repeatedly.
Writer Jon Grosso added to the Catholic op-ed some firsthand reports of Vance’s conduct right after the killing of Alex Pretti. The vice president at that time, without having any substantial proof, labeled the victim an assassin.
Grosso remarked, “Vice President JD Vance reposted Stephen Miller, who on X called Pretti an ‘assassin’ who ‘tried to murder federal agents’ — a statement that is not supported by any evidence. As a Catholic, Vance could have chosen to share the Gospel message of healing and human dignity. Instead, he chose to offer the MAGA message of division and blame.”

It must be noted that this is not the first time JD Vance has locked horns with the Catholic community. He once said, “There is a Christian concept that you love your family, and then you love your neighbour, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritise the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that.”
In response, newly elected Pope Leo XIV made his views about the U.S. vice president quite clear. He said, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others,” while condemning the kind of hierarchy Vance applied to loving others.
