Haidar Alfadawi, a man from Michigan, filed a police complaint after fearing an attack on his life. When he went to the Dearborn Police Department to get an update on an assault report, the officers brushed him off. However, hours later, he was run over by a car. After spending two months in a coma, the Michigan man is finally awake.

According to a report, by Fox 2 Detroit on August 23, Haidar Alfadawi recorded himself at the Dearborn Police Department, where he was ignored by officials when asked about an assault report he filed earlier that week. He also told the cops that he  feared an attack on his life.

The same day, surveillance footage captured the Michigan man getting run over by a car. The driver was later identified as Murtadha Alizairij, 38. He was spotted fleeing the scene right after striking Alfadawi with his vehicle.

According to inmate reports, the driver later turned himself in and was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault/bodily harm less than murder, and assault with intent to murder. He was booked into the Wayne County Jail on August 25 and held on a $750,000 bond. Meanwhile, PEOPLE reports that Alfadawi sustained major injuries, including trauma to his brain.

Amir Makled, Alfadawi’s attorney, told PEOPLE, “Haidar, waking up after more than two months in a medically induced coma, is nothing short of a miracle.”

“While he still has a long and challenging recovery ahead due to the extensive injuries he suffered, this moment has brought tremendous relief to his loved ones. His family is grateful for the community’s prayers and support, and they remain focused on helping him heal,” the attorney told the outlet in a statement on November 18.

Makled added, “For weeks, his family lived with uncertainty and fear, unsure if he would ever open his eyes again. Today, seeing him awake, responsive, and showing small signs of recognition, has given everyone a renewed sense of hope.”

According to Fox 2 Detroit, the officer who allegedly ignored the man’s concerns for his safety has been placed on administrative duty. “Public safety is our highest priority, and we take every concern seriously. We understand the community has questions and are committed to ensuring trust through transparency and accountability,” said Chief Issa Shahin.

Meanwhile, Alfadawi’s attorney told CBS Detroit, “We don’t know what the prosecutor’s office is doing in terms of moving forward with the case, but it’s our position that they should ask for full punishment under the law.”

Meanwhile, according to CBS Detroit, Alizairij’s early pretrial hearing is scheduled for early December. The Michigan man worked for Alizairij, and the two got embroiled in a disagreement over a traffic ticket. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the hit-and-run was allegedly triggered by their dispute.
