Usha Vance, is very much admired by many for her calm composure. Her amazing fashion choices have been grabbing attention too. And when she does speak, people listen, especially when she opens up about something as personal as parenting.
In her first-ever longform interview, Usha sat down with Meghan McCain for a candid chat on the Citizen McCain podcast, and what unfolded was a revealing look into her life as a mother of three, and her take on why that number might just be the sweet spot for American women.

The interview comes just days after Usha and Vice President JD Vance faced criticism over their kids’ behavior during the high-profile military parade. Despite the noise, Usha hasn’t shied away from speaking about the “challenges” of parenting, something she’s acknowledged before. And in this newest appearance, she didn’t hold back.
Meghan, who is currently expecting her third child, and her first boy, used the moment to ask Usha for some advice. “I keep reading all this horrible data about how people with three kids, it’s like the worst amount of kids to have,” McCain said. “And I wanted to know if you could share with me, and women in America, why having three kids is good, how you manage three kids, and any advice for boy moms.”
That’s when Usha lit up.
“I love having three kids. I’m a huge proponent of it,” she replied. “I mean, obviously, people want to have different family sizes for different reasons, but what I’ve really enjoyed about three kids, is that it’s just enough for them to all be kind of a pack.”
The Vances, who share sons Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and daughter Mirabel, 3, have weathered their fair share of online commentary, but Usha’s warmth and humor brought a different light to the conversation. She described the surprising ease of becoming a mom of three, hinting that the hardest transition isn’t what people expect.
“I thought Zero to one was an enormous shock… Zero feels one way, and one feels like the entire world is turned upside down and you don’t know what you’re doing and what’s up and what’s down,” she shared. “One to two wasn’t that bad, and two to three was shockingly easiest of all.”
Usha’s comments come at a time when the Trump-Vance administration is reportedly mulling over proposals to encourage women to have more children, including a controversial idea of a $5,000 “baby bonus.” There was even talk of a National Medal of Motherhood for women who raise six or more kids.

But while the policies sparked backlash, with critics citing skyrocketing costs of living, lack of childcare support, and weak family leave policies, Usha’s comments appear to lean more into the emotional rewards of motherhood than any legislative push.
