First Lady Melnia Trump and Second Lady Usha Vance have never been comfortable with each other and every time they make a public appearance together, that shows. On May 21, 2025, Usha and Melania were spotted together at the Senate Spouses Luncheon at White House and after their pictures together were released on the Instagram page of The White House, netizens were quick to point out how awkward they looked beside each other.
The pictures that The White House posted show Melania and Usha standing side-by-side but maintaining a discernible distance between them, which makes it look like they are scared to even accidentally touch each other. The two ladies are seen smiling but there is no warmth between them and neither was there any hugs or kisses that they shared.

While some fans of the Donald Trump administration praised the two, a number of netizens called out how awkward and fake the whole thing looked. One user commented, “Love how they stand next to each other awkwardly, so humanizing.” Another one wrote, “I like how they don’t even touch. It looks uncomfortable.” Another user went a step forward and said, “They HATE each other.”
It should be noted here that this is not the first time that Melania and Usha have made an awkward public appearance like this. Previously, during the President’s inauguration both the ladies shared the same room but seemed more relaxed when they were in different corners of the room. Even when they had to come together for pictures or something else, there was always a visible distance between the two, which showed how Usha and Melania perhaps give each other some kind of ick.
Melania’s cold chemistry with Usha Vance is even more noticeable because of the relationship she had shared with the former Second Lady, Karen Pence. During Donald Trump’s first term as the American President, Mike Pence was the Vice President and Melania was quite comfortable with his wife Karen. The two women appeared friendly and warm in front of the camera and even travelled together and Melania did not seem to be awkward about hugging or shaking hands with Karen as she does with Usha.
However, given how different Usha Vance is from Karen Pence or from all the other MAGA ladies for that matter, Melania’s discomfort and awkwardness around her is understandable. They do not have much in common and neither of them seem very keen to bridge the gap between them and thus continue their cold and awkward public appearances.
