GM has issued a recall of almost 474,000 Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Saturn sedans, in order to fix a transmission issue that can make the cars roll away unexpectedly.
The recall by General Motors affects 2007-2010 Chevrolet Malibus, Pontiac G6s, and Saturn Auras in the US, Canada, and Mexico, as well as some exports, reports CBS News .
The sedans affected all came with 4-speed automatic transmissions. GM says the recall addresses transmission cables, which can break and cause the shifter to show the car in park, when it is actually still in gear. So far four crashes have been reported to GM because of the transmission problem, with no injuries.
Owners will be told by letter when they are able to set up an appointment with dealers. During the appointment, dealers will either put a retainer over the end of the cables, or replace them entirely.
MSN Autos notes that GM originally issued a recall in 2009 for a similar shifting issue, which involved about 277,000 vehicles. While gathering data for the US government investigation, the company discovered the most recent issue, prompting a second recall. The government began investigating the issue last year after receiving reports of seven crashes, with one injury.
The auto manufacturer has not announced the start date for the recall, whose issue is at best a nuisance with the car not able to start, or at worst making the car roll freely into traffic. They added that the issue is caused by a “unique” design they used for the cable connectors.
