A spinach recall is affecting 19 states as the FDA pulls a limited quantity of Fresh Express Spinach because of a possible health risk from Salmonella.

As the FDA notes in a press release, there have been no illnesses or consumer complaints yet, but the spinach recall is going on as a preventative measure.

“The recall notification is being issued out of an abundance of caution due to an isolated instance in which a random sample yielded a positive result for Salmonella under US Department of Agriculture’s random sample testing program,” the FDA release stated. “Fresh Express is coordinating closely with regulatory officials.”

The spinach recall affects salads distributed largely to the Western region of the United States. Consumers who purchased the nine ounce spinach, with a Product Code of S299B25, are asked to throw it away.

The FDA gave these special instructions to identify the product affected in the spinach recall:

  • Product Being Recalled: Fresh Express Spinach in 9 oz. package
  • Product Code: S299B25 (located in upper right corner on front of package)
  • Use-by Date: November 7 (also located in upper right hand corner of package)
  • Distribution: Primarily in the Western region of the U.S.

This is the latest in a number of spinach recalls to take place in the last year, The Huffington Post noted. Last week Wegman’s Food Markets announced a spinach recall that affected its organic spinach and spring mix due to fears of E. coli. In that case, there were people affected; an estimated 16 cases of E. coli were linked to the product.
