‘Alaskan Bush People’ Canceled: Show’s Renewal A Lost Cause As Real Bush Families Get Featured On Networks

Fans of the hit show Alaskan Bush People may be in for a huge disappointment as the latest news reports suggest that Alaskan Bush People has been canceled, especially as real Alaskan bush families get featured — and are, ultimately, a hit — for the Discovery Networks family.

According to Blasting News , Alaskan Bush People being canceled is a foregone conclusion, considering that the latest season was supposed to begin in November and there hasn’t been a word promoting the show from the Discovery Networks family. This, alone, is enough to indicate that the show’s fate has been sealed, but that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to petition the powers that be at the network to bring the show back via an online petition.

Much of the discontentment with the show came with the revelation that the Brown family — the so-called “Wolf Pack” — weren’t living the way they claimed to be and were in fact a lot more financially well off than they proclaimed to be on the show. In addition, Joshua “Bam” Brown’s romance with a Discovery Networks TV producer drew a lot of fire and may have been another reason why the show was, ultimately, canceled (since it’s forbidden for producers to get involved with the people they’re filming).

But the real reason why Alaskan Bush People is canceled, according to a few different outlets, is that the recent spate of reality shows based in Alaska demonstrate how real Alaskan bush people live, and it has absolutely nothing to do with how the Brown family claim they live. For example, the Alaskan Dispatch News talks about the case of Alaska: The Last Frontier , which is another show that’s on the Discovery Channel’s family of networks, and focuses on the Kilcher family. If the name sounds familiar, it should. That’s singer-songwriter Jewel’s family, and she was even featured on the premiere episode. Unlike the Browns, who deal in tired stereotypical tropes, the Kilcher family show what it’s like to really live in the Alaskan bush.

No, it’s certainly not like living in New York City, but the Kilchers have to deal with their fair share of wilderness, freezing cold, and other extreme conditions. But to claim that they live like “noble savages” the way the Brown family does is just silly, and neither do they make that claim. And when viewers see things like this and compare it to the Brown family’s claims, it becomes obvious that the Browns are, at the very least, stretching the truth.

And there’s another reason why Alaskan Bush People should be canceled, if it hasn’t been already. Even their idea of “the Alaskan Bush” is wrong. According to Alaskan Public Radio , “the bush” merely refers to any region of the state of Alaska that’s not easily accessible by roadways or the Alaskan ferry system. In addition, many people that live in Alaska live in “the bush,” and they live in a way that actually isn’t that far removed from that of their ancestors.

Even in the case of the most “remote” bush areas — like Unalaska — the people still aren’t removed from the rest of civilization. In fact, Unalaska is home to Dutch Harbor, the biggest fishing port in the United States. So as more shows about Alaska come out, and the Browns are exposed as alleged liars, it makes sense that the Discovery Networks wouldn’t be interested in renewing their show.
