Samsung has begun producing the industries first 20nm NAND flash for memory cards according to a company press release, the move gives them a leg up in the very competitive flash memory market.

The companies NAND uses MLC 32GB tech which is built on top of the 20nm process. The cards will be used in smartphones, memory cards and other portable electronic devices. According to Samsung the new 20nm NAND is also 50% more productive than 30nm MLC NAND memory.

In terms of performance, the NAND memory is 30% faster than 30nm NAND with 20MB/s read speeds and 10MB/s write times.

Supply is still very limited, however Samsung is promising to ramp up production later this year. Typically it has taken 3-6 months for new memory card types to flood the market, with strict product control leading up to that point.
