The trailer for the Blade Runner sequel has just been released, and it gives fans a first look at the Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling starrer.

In the clip, Ford can be seen telling Ryan Gosling’s character about replicants being either a huge help to humanity or a danger that needs to be controlled. “If they’re a benefit, it’s not my problem,” he said.

There’s not much detail on what Gosling will play, but based on the trailer, his job was once held by Ford’s Rick Deckard.

“I did your job once. I was good at it,” Deckard says, to which Gosling replies, “Things were simpler then.”

Blade Runner 2049 is written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, piggybacking on the original screenplay from Fancher and David Peoples. The original film was based on the novel by Philip K. Dick titled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

This one won’t be directed by Ridley Scott, but he will serve as the executive producer.

Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve earlier said that comparisons to the first film could not be avoided. But he quickly added that they do not hope to replicate what Scott managed to achieve.

“First of all, it’s not possible to live up to the original. It’s Ridley Scott. It’s a masterpiece. It’s one of the best sci-fi films, one of the best films in the past 50 years. For me, what terrorizes me right now is what I’m doing is taking Blade Runner and making it my own, and that is horrific.”

“To realize that when I look at the dailies, it’s not Ridley Scott, it’s me, and that it’s different,” Villeneuve added. “It’s still the same universe, we are still in the same dream, but it’s mine, so it’s like I have no idea how you people will react, I don’t know. It has its own life.”

The official synopsis for Blade Runner 2049 reads :

“ Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.”

The original Blade Runner consistently lands among the top sci-fi films of all time. It’s got an 8.2 rating from IMDb users and a 100% rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Since its release on June 25, 1982, the film has managed to gross $32,868,943 in box-office receipts.

The vagueness of Ford’s character was also the subject of numerous debates, which revolve on whether or not Deckard was a replicant or not. The 74-year-old actor had said in previous interviews that Scott had told him personally that his character was human.

In a previous interview with THR , Scott said that Ford was hesitant at first to reprise his role in the Blade Runner sequel. But then he nagged him about reading the script first before making a decision.

He said that the sequel wouldn’t have worked without Ford and so he dogged the veteran actor.

“I got Harrison [Ford] back,” Scott said. “Harrison said, ‘Meh,’ and I said, ‘No, read this.’ And I think he said, ‘This is the best script I’ve ever had.’ We’ve been working on it for a couple of years.”

Blade Runner 2049 stars Ford, Gosling, Ana de Armas, Robin Wright, Jared Leto, Sylvia Hoeks, Mackenzie Davis, Dave Bautista, Carla Juri, and Lennie James. The film is due to premiere on Oct. 6. 2017.
