While most clocks simply tell us what time it is, Tikker attempts to tell us what time it is and the exact time that we will die.
Spurred as a Kickstarter campaign Tikker uses a questionnaire to determine a persons life expectancy and then begins the countdown towards death.
Users fill out the questionnaire about their health history, subtract that total from their age, and the countdown begins.
Using accepted scientific methods the Tikker “About Time” booklet leads buyers through the process of calculating their lifespan.
So why would anyone want to count down the years, months, hours, and even seconds they have left to live? Tikker says the point is to remind us that we shouldn’t waste our lives.
In an email to Mashable Tikker creator Fredrik Colting says:
“I think we can have a better life, and make better choices, if we are more aware of our upcoming expiration. It gives us perspective — the little stuff suddenly doesn’t seem so important anymore. That’s why I see Tikker as a happiness watch.”
While some observers call Tikker a “death watch” the company really places an emphasis on how long we have left to live and not how short our time on this Earth really boils down to.
The Tikker watch took two years to develop and the campaign on Kickstarter has raised just over $4,000 at this time from 117 backers. The Kickstarter is asking for $39 for the watch and pledging ends on November 1.
My one concern isn’t watching my life count down, but whether or not the battery inside the watch will outlive the recipient.
