Amanda Knox’s ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito gave his first interview in the US with Katie Couric on her new daytime talk show on Tuesday, talking about the trial, as well as how he still keeps in touch with Knox.
Sollecito’s tell-all book about their experience was published on Tuesday as well, and talks about the pair as they were arrested and tried for the murder of Knox’s former roommate, Meredith Kercher, reports The Chicago Tribune .
Sollecito told Katie Couric that he and Knox still keep in touch, explaining:
“We Skype sometimes. We exchange emails. [Knox] sang a song for me during our last Skype conversation.”
The Italian man who was recently forgiven of the murder charge against him described his and Knox’s romance as a “dreamy” nine-day” adventure in 2007, until they found themselves at the center of a high-profile murder case. They would eventually spend four years in an Italian prison until an appeal threw out their convictions based on a lack of evidence.
ABC News notes that Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito also had a secret reunion after they were released from jail. Sollecito told Couric that, “I was stuck a little bit. I was nervous” about meeting Knox again after what had happened.
He added that he felt like meeting her again would be like a “ghost” and that her image would “bring up to me the image of the nightmare” of his four years in prison.
The pair reunited in Knox’s hometown of Seattle earlier in 2012, and Sollecito recalled that his fears of a nightmare were unfounded. The Italian added that:
“When she hugged me, I realized she was not my ghost, my nightmare.”
They also kept in touch during their four years in prison as they exchanged notes, magazines, books, and even stories about their families and friends. And despite the four years spent behind bars, as well as the continued threat of life in prison as prosecutors seek to have their appeal overturned, Sollecito stated that he has rejected advice from family and friends that he stop speaking with Knox.
When Katie asked on her new talk show whether he regrets having met Amanda Knox, he replied by saying, “No. It was not her fault. It was the fault of the detectives.”
