After completing their first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) call using an LG Revolution, Verizon has announced that they will push the release date of the technology until mid-2012.
The call, completed at 6:54AM Eastern time on Wednesday lasted just 33 seconds, however that time allotment will be enough for Verizon Wireless engineers to run tests needed to improve data and voice capabilities for the technology. The call was followed by tests to prove that both data and voice could work at the same time.
While the technology won’t be fully available until Mid-2012, Verizon is working on bringing “rich communications services” to their customers.
Verizon is taking baby steps towards properly implementing new 4G technology and that shouldn’t come as a surprise as the tech is considered a critical advance for Verizon and their U.S. based cellular systems which tend to drop calls when data is used for more than a few minutes at a time. Comparably AT&T and T-Mobile can handle calls and data at the same time without interruptions.
