[Report] Microsoft Developing Gaming-Focused Tablet Called ‘Xbox Surface’

Microsoft has plans to enter the mobile gaming space with a 7-inch gaming tablet of its own, according to a report from The Verge .

Back in June, a document purporting to be partial technical specifications for a tablet known as “Xbox Surface” made its way to the web, but little talk was heard beyond that. The Verge’s report claims that those specifications were real, and that Xbox Surface will indeed be the tablet’s name.

No solid specifications were given in The Verge’s report, but the site claimed that Xbox Surface will employ the power of a custom ARM processor along with “high-bandwidth” RAM.

The Verge reports:

“We’re told these specifications could be altered to accommodate an unannounced Intel SoC and that the Xbox Surface is being developed independent of specific hardware architecture. Microsoft’s Xbox Surface won’t run a full version of Windows, rather this 7-inch tablet will run a custom Windows kernel. Messaging and other tablet functions may be supported, but the focus is on gaming.”

According to the original document leaked back in June, the Xbox Surface will feature a 7-inch multi-touch LED display, and will be running at a resolution of 1280×720. The device will reportedly be built specifically for gaming, which may or may not change if Microsoft decides to move forward with development.

When reached out for comment by the site, Microsoft gave its standard “we do not comment on rumors or speculation” response.

Do you think it would be a good idea for Microsoft to release a tablet specifically for gaming, or should Microsoft instead focus on a more traditional tablet?
