Arcade Fire is currently the top alternative act in the music scene and for that reason every track they release comes with plenty of hope and skepticism.

On Saturday night the famed act appeared on SNL (Saturday Night Live) , where they debuted the new song “Afterlife.”

The song was loved by some fans while others now claim that Arcade Fire has sold out and departed from the sounds that made them special.

Following the bands appearance on SNL fans took to Facebook and Twitter where they hailed and harassed the band over the “Afterlife” track.

Fans quickly claimed that the group was going too “eighties” for the track, while others said drug use and an overblown band size have led to the downfall of the powerhouse ensemble.

The band had earlier performed in the sketch entitled “New Cast Member or Arcade Fire” and ultimately fans used that sketch to proclaim that the new song must have been a joke.

Arcade Fire will debut its new album titled Reflektor on October 28. Only after the album is released will fans be able to proclaim another critical success or a sell out album.

There are always fans of critically acclaimed bands who will attack any departure in the groups sound. However, the “Afterlife” track also received praise from many Twitter users who believe the song fits well into the groups alternative sound.

After performing “Afterlife,” the band also performed the new album’s title track and lead single.

Following the Saturday Night Live performance Arcade Fire stuck around for NBC’s post-SNL, celebrity heavy special “Here Comes the Night Time.”

Did you catch the Arcade Fire performance on SNL? Do you think the bands new music will be critically acclaimed or lose some of the groups loyal fans?
