This is probably the first really good team we have reviewed this year. The San Diego Chargers finished the 2010 NFL regular season with a 9-7 record. They have a good offense, they have a pretty good defense, and the one thing everyone points too is they have maybe not one of the best coaching staffs. At 9-7 they were pretty good, but not great and they missed the playoffs to a 10-6 Kansas City Chiefs team. I think we expected more from the team, but three losses in row in October really sank this team.
The offense scored 441 points or 27.6 pointes per game on average. That was the second best mark of the 32 NFL teams in 2010. Phillip Rivers is their QB and he completed 66% of his passes for 30 TD’s and just 13 INT’s. He passed for 4,710 yards and all of those are pretty great numbers. His O line did allow 38 sacks and the running game averaged 113 yards on the ground.
The defense gave up 332 points or 20.1 points per game on average. They were the number one defense in terms of yards given up, first downs allowed, passing yards allowed, and in net yards per pass attempt. Those are very good numbers but their take away differential was -6. That is not so great as they only forced 11 fumbles and picked off 16 passes. Of course they also had 47 sacks.
This is a hard one to figure out. They lost to the Oakland Raiders twice and to the Chiefs once. That really sank them within their own division, but this team really played down to their competition. That is an indictment of the coaching staff. I think that is what needs to be changed for this team to get over the hump.
