Cisco Grabs Jabber’s Instant Messaging Business

Jabber is now in the hands of Cisco . The company announced plans to buy the instant messaging platform this morning, though the price isn’t being disclosed.

Cisco says it’ll use the Jabber technology to expand its own IM service within its enterprise collaboration tools. It’s certainly fighting hard to grow those tools, too. The Silicon Valley company announced its completed acquisition of e-mail/calendar software company PostPath just a couple of days ago. And something seems to be working: Cisco’s shares are up about 6 percent so far today.

Jabber, which allows you to communicate across a variety of IM services, is currently based in Denver. Cisco hasn’t discussed its plans for that office or the people who currently work there.

The deal is expected to be completed by early 2009.
