A recent study released by The Harvard Business Review states that only 36 percent of tweets are actually interesting to Twitter users.
Twitter, an online social networking service, was founded in 2006 by Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, and others who form Odeo.com and Obvious Corporation. The site features people who frequently tweet about what they are up to in 140 characters or less.
The study reported that 36 percent of the tweets users read were interesting. 39 percent of the remaining tweets were okay to read, and about 25 percent were not even worth reading. 1,443 users were involved in the study, and they rated the quality of 43,738 tweets.
Researchers explained that the most interesting tweets for users asked interesting questions, were funny, shared information, or were self-promotional. Unsurprisingly, tweets that shared opinions or complaints were scored the lowest. And, to be frank, who is really interested in the fact that you just woke up, or that you are, “Eating Mexican for lunch”?
Maura Judkis of The Washington Post wrote that, “Many people probably think they’re an exception to this rule…but unless their name is Lady Gaga, that’s probably not the case.”
She goes on to say that, “Twitter gives us the platform to be witty and funny and interesting, 24/7, when very few people other than professional comedians and entertainers actually have the ability to do so.”
With that said, many viewers of the study have a different opinion. One commenter wrote that:
“Oh, so completely disagree. Everyone has a different viewpoint. I only like market research tweets. Foodies only like food tweets. Gardeners only like gardening tweets. I truly believe that 99% of tweets are worth reading at least by someone. I find it disrespectful and self-centered to think otherwise.”
To date, twitter has half a billion registered users, with new accounts being created every 11 seconds. In all, about 175 million new tweets are created per day.
