Oakland Raiders cut Tom Cable loose

So, the Oakland Raiders have declined the option on Tom Cable’s contract, and effectively he becomes the 7th head coach fired this NFL season. Let me be clear here, I am not a Tom Cable fan nor do I like the way he carries himself. However after turning the Raiders around and scoring an 8-8 season, not to mention a 6-0 record in the AFC west this decision really puzzles me. It seemed that the Raiders were on the right track, but AL Davis has made this move for some other reason.

The word I keep hearing is that many within the Raiders organization, and I don’t know if that means Al himself or the front office staff, feel that Cable was not hard enough on the younger players. That seems a little ridiculous to me, when we are talking about a guy who might have punched an assistant coach in the face.

This brings me to another point. If the Raiders were willing to stick with Cable through that affair, why fire him after he got you some on the field success. Sure for some the 8-8 Raiders season was a disappointment, to me it was a step in the right direction. I seriously wonder if AL Davis does these things just to cause controversy and get his team media attention.

The team would like to promote Offensive Coordinator Hue Jackson, but with four other NFL teams also looking for a coach they might face some competition for him. Of course when we are talking about the Raiders anything could happen. Maybe I should dust off the old resume and see…..(that of course is a joke).
