UFL Virginia gets Destroyers moniker

UFL Virginia finally has its real name. The sixth UFL team will be called the Virginia Destroyers. After a lengthy fan vote both on the UFL official site and fanhouse.com. I got to say even though I favored some of the other names in the contest, after seeing this logo I am a believer that the fans got this one right. Of the six UFL teams this is now my favorite logo, and I cannot wait to see the design of their uniforms.

The challenge for the Destroyers now is to create an atmosphere like the one we find currently in Omaha, Nebraska. This team needs to find a fan base, and work towards turning them out to games and events en masse. Since the fans were allowed to name the team themselves part of that battle has already been one.

The Destroyers will play their home game at the Virginia Beach Sport Plex. That stadium was originally built to host soccer events and currently seats a little north of 10 thousand fans. The team and league will spend some money to expand those facilities to probably get the seating to make room for 15k to 20k fans.

As previously reported Joe Moglia will be this team’s head coach, and we learned today that he will serve as its President as well. Washington Redskins legend Doug Williams is this team’s General Manager. Ed Reynolds who has over seen the team since the UFL seized control back from a group led by Jim Speros will continue to help the team through January.
