Zimmerman Lawyer Calls Prosecutors A ‘Disgrace To My Profession’

George Zimmerman lead attorney has called the Florida prosecutors in his clients’ case, a “disgrace to my profession” for holding back evidence for months.

Mark O’Mara has pledged new efforts to impose sanctions on them.

O’Mara and co-counsel Don West were the attorney’s representing Zimmerman, who was acquitted of all charges against him on Saturday night.

A requirement known as the Brady disclosure demands that prosecutors share evidence with defense attorneys especially if it can help exonerate their client.

O’Mara accused the prosecutors of several violations before the trial and judge Debra Nelson responded that she would look at the charges once the case was over due to lack of time.

“This is not acceptable, and is not going to be tolerated in any case that I’m involved in,” O’Mara told Reuters in New York on Monday, accusing special prosecutor Angela Corey and lead trial attorney Bernie de la Rionda of Brady violations.

“They are a disgrace to my profession,” Zimmerman’s attorney said, referring specifically to de la Rionda and Corey. “They said my client was ‘lucky’ to have been acquitted. Really?”

Corey commented that the statements are false and challenged O’Mara to to point to any judge’s ruling that her office improperly withheld evidence.

“Our office adhered to the highest standards of ethical behavior,” Corey told Reuters in a telephone interview. “Our rules of professional conduct regulate comments like that. I don’t think those are the kind of comments that are appropriate.”

O’Mara’s statements stem from phone records from Trayvon Martin’s phone, which according to him, were not turned over to the defense.

O’Mara said he intends to amend his request for sanctions against the prosecutors in light of testimony from the trial, calling prosecutors’ failure to turn over data from Martin’s phone records for months “an undeniable Brady violation.”

Prosecutors handed over raw data from Martin’s phone which was extracted by an IT employee, who has since been terminated.

Zimmerman’s lawyer animosity towards the prosecutors has been ongoing since the charges were brought on last year.
