Mermaid Hoax Documentary Brings Record Ratings For Animal Planet

mermaids

Mermaids aren’t real but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t fascinating. More than 3.5 million people tuned in to watch the new mermaid hoax documentary on Animal Planet.

The fake documentary, called Mermaids: The New Evidence, brought in 3.6 million viewers and set a new ratings record for Animal Planet.

This is the second mermaid hoax documentary for Animal Planet. Last year they released Mermaid: The Body Foundand an internet debate about the existence of mermaids. NOAA even released a statement to assure people that there was no evidence of aquatic sea people.

NOAA writes: “The belief in mermaids may have arisen at the very dawn of our species. Magical female figures first appear in cave paintings in the late Paleolithic (Stone Age) period some 30,000 years ago, when modern humans gained dominion over the land and, presumably, began to sail the seas. Half-human creatures, called chimeras, also abound in mythology — in addition to mermaids, there were wise centaurs, wild satyrs, and frightful minotaurs, to name but a few. But are mermaids real? No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.”

Animal Planet did its best to avoid the controversy this time around by adding a disclaimer before the documentary. Biologist Dr. Paul Robertson also said earlier this week that the documentary was based on questionable science. Robertson said that the information was presented in documentary form because they wanted to make it believable.

Robertson said: “I wanted the story to appeal to a sense of genuine possibility, and incorporating real science and evolutionary theory and real-world scientific examples — such as animals that have made the transition from land to sea, much as we suggest mermaids did — and citing real, albeit controversial theories like the Aquatic Ape Hypothesis, grounded it. Using a straight, documentarian approach made the story more persuasive by appealing more to a sense of intellectual possibility as well as emotional possibility.”

Mermaids: The New Evidence didn’t actually uncover any new evidence about mermaids but Animal Planet president Marjorie Kaplan is still proud of the mermaid hoax documentary for bringing in a big audience.

Kaplan said: “The phenomenon of Mermaids has truly been a watershed – and a watercooler – moment for Animal Planet… These extraordinary television specials have electrified, challenged and entertained television audiences and online fans alike.”

While I love Animal Planet (a few less stories about snakes & Bigfoot please), I find this "fake" documentary in the name of ratings is appalling! I watched both, because I do think we have not discovered all that lives on this planet (re: the pink snail story today out of New Zealand), but if we cant trust Animal Planet to have 'true' documentaries, then they are no better than the History revisionists that abound in the media, that tell us history was not as we were taught in school, back when history was actually being taught in schools in the U.S. Stop the fake documentaries, please!

  2. Anonymous

How could it even be called a "Documentary" when we already know it's fake? What it REALLY is, is a big waste of time!

  3. Anonymous

As soon as they brought in the Kardasians (sp?) as a reliable source I knew it was fake.

  4. Rainy Tridwr

After that fake presentation how can we believe anything they produce from now on. I have banned this program as unsuitable viewing material Bye and no more.

  5. Jessica Brown

I watched the so called documentary and it did seem really fake, but I still do believe in the idea that creatures like this might exist..we still havnt been to the bottoms of our oceans to say we discovered ever creature living in it..we are still making more discoverys of things on land! however if something like this were ever true the government would hide it all anyways just like the whole no life on other planes except ours..that's just dumb the oceans and the universe are way to big for us to ever know all its secrets.

  6. Nicki Arias

The media is filtered people for all of you who don't know this. The government filters what we hear and what we don't hear for control purposes. This documentary has to be called fake for fear of stirring up the massess and going against the government for killing off a human species for the sole selfish gain of weapon testing. For everyone who completely trusts the government and truelly believes they would never lie, or do anything to hurt its people is completely stupid. There isn't too many if any so called FAKE documentary's out there, they have to call it fake for the purpose of controlling the people because the government knows there's a lot of idiots out there that will believe them , and if Animal Planet said it was real the government would never let them show it! There is a good possibility the documentary IS real, You people really should NOT believe everything you hear for face value!

  7. Colleen Herrel

While this subject is very intriguing, and I admit to enjoying both "mockumentaries" I wonder why Animal Planet is airing a clearly fictional program? Trying to fool the public into thinking this piece had "real" footage is insulting. The acting was very poor and the videos clearly were CG'd. I love mermaids and the program raises some questions, but this kind of program should be on another channel.

  8. Anonymous

They call it fake because there's no such things as mermaids. Time to jump on board the Reality Express and ride that train for the entire journey!!

  9. John Cropley

Is this the same "documentary" that was shown on Discovery channel last year? Way to catch up Animal Planet.

  10. Anonymous

You are completely and utterly correct. I was very dissapointed that Animal Planet and Diiscovery would think so little of its viewers and think they would be so absent minded as to find credibility in this 'documentary'. I would expect something like this from other channels such as TruTV or SyFy because they produce shows like this. I will from now on be watching A LOT of History Channel or NatGeo. THeir attempt at ratings will now have teh opposite effect on me.

  11. Patricia Donnellan

I must be confused – I thought a documentary was based on true facts. Shame on Animal Planet for calling the Mermaid show a documentary.

  12. Denise Hooks

I saw it for just a few moments as I was channel surfing, and couldn't believe how hokey and pathetic it was. I also couldn't believe that this was actually allowed to be put on tv. They've really reached a new low this time. So have the people who chose to be in it.

  13. Anonymous

Lost credibility in the name of sponsors and ratings. Disturbing

When I noticed all the female scientists were hot, I knew it was a hoax.

  15. Rick Uyhelyi

i was going to say the same thing lol…the people, or should i say actors, were terrible.

  16. Anonymous

more than likely, y'all are so indignant and 'appalled' at this fake-umentary because y'all believed it until you realized AP has having you on (British phrase-ology for 'pulling your leg')…but hell, I believed in Big Foot until my neighbor's wife got her hair done and shaved her beard.

  17. Laura McKenzie Davidson

I couldn't believe it. I was so disappointed. The program should have STARTED out with "This is not an actual documentary" or something similar. Animal planet is supposed to be geared towards educating youth about animals. I lost respect for the channel after this stunt.

  18. Cynthia Ivey

People either want to believe or not to believe in "mermaids", but the truth of the matter is, we just simply don't know what all is down in the ocean. It's mostly unexplored, I don't know why EVERY person has to have an opinion on something we know nothing about. As technology comes we discover new things that people would have never believed before, so just hold on to your hats because more is to come!

  19. Anonymous

I watched a few minutes of this "documentary" and I thought it was nonsense. Couldn't even watch the whole thing. I guess there COULD BE mermaids, just as there could be Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, aliens… God… (not to start any conflicts about religion…)

  20. Elizabeth Willman Cockrell

It really doesn't matter if it was real or fake as anyone who has lived more than forty years in this country realizes that literally anything that threatens the use of Military Weaponry, standardized Christians beliefs, or even worse – the ceasing of off shore oil drilling, becomes immediately discounted, discredited or destroyed. Use your own intelligence and think about it: why would well educated, informed and high ranking people set out to make a mockery of themselves? They wouldn't.

  21. Nomorereason Dragneel

A friend in school was telling me that Mermaids were real after he watched this…I told that it was probably fake…I guess I was right..Hmph,

  22. Rainy Tridwr

Devin Runyan Then stick to the cartoon channel. How can you believe them any more.

  23. Rickster Richie Wichmann

What's new? They try to fake us out with all the computer generated animation. It's ridiculous! Just like the big Dinosaur thing they had last year. It was so freaking fake and the present it like it's factual.

  24. Terri Willman

I loved the mermaid documentary last night on discovery. I choose to believe they exist…. At minimum, the government needs to stop all sonar testing as it effects the mammals of the sea. It seems every time they test we have mass beachings. Just my 2 cents….

  25. Bob Moore

Really shameful of Animal Planet… the FCC or some government agency needs to take action… I was browsing the channels, and saw this show last night, officially categorized as "Learning".

And by the way conspiracy theorists, wake up and do your research, on every issue… from credible sources only.

  26. Anonymous

ya because mermaids are the key to our governments power… ha ha ha
wow dumbest thing i have ever read not even close i love it
im forwarding this to everyone i know to prove to them that dumbasses are in fact very much real.

  27. Lisa Oldham

I think this so-called "documentary" is a disgrace and I have banned Animal Planet and so should you! I can't believe how many people actually fall for this kind of crap. The dumbing down of society and no one seems to care. What happened to the critical thinkers? Go back to your online games and "reality" tv.

  28. Anonymous

anyone who has lived in this country for more than 5 years knows mermaids dont f'n exist.

  29. Scott Ramsay

OMG, Nicki. The government might lie, but they don't give a DAMN about whether you believe in mermaids or not! They made it to get ratings and fool and entertain gullible people who want to believe in crap like this like you. And they succeeded in a giant way!

  30. Jared Warm

sundance couldn't be more wrong. buy into the propaganda some more! the fact is, these "new" creatures are being CREATED through GENETIC ENGINEERING. look it up and EDUCATE YOURSELF.

Like George Carlin once said, "Think about how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that". I mean seriously, I saw the preview and was like, yeah ok, stupid! I can't believe ANYbody actually watched it. Wow.

I'm guessing you aren't an English Major at Framingham St. Scary to think you're allowed to vote, drive vehicles, and procreate.

  35. Dan Ciha

I watched this on the Discovery channel and its precious life minutes I cant get back. Discovery and Animal Planet just went down a few notches on my "go to" channels…what some BS.

they need to add a disclaimer before "The Bible" too. promoting it as fact. when it should be absolute Fiction. different station but same bullshit!

  38. Anonymous

Absolutely appalling. What is next "The Naked Zoologist" reality show? "The Bikini Model Field trip to the Galapagos"?

  39. John Manker

its always a hoax if the government has their fingers in it if it was a hoax they spent a lot of money on this documentary I would think marine biologists have better things to do than involve themselves in a hoax.

  40. Anonymous

I would rather watch a fake mermaid show than dumb jersey shore or pregnant tennager's and their problems ANY day!

  41. Anonymous

So what if it was fake? It was better the reality crap they usually show. I found it entertaining. We humans don't know everything there is to know about this planet so who knows? They could exist and we would never know it.

  42. Ken Packet

They're real and they are DELICIOUS…filleted with a lemon butter sauce…mmm-mmm!

  43. Debra Ricci

    gvexed,
With so much of today's society thinking it is acceptable to lie (politics, religion..), I am at the very least dissappointed in a channel that I had respected for so long. I think to sum it all up, it is the lack of resect overall that they feel they can just do this and then openly admitt it with simply a shrudge and a smile. This world is really changing into something much worse and I really hope that animals like the mermaids will never be found. And, I also hope jwDICKinson and Devil, oops I mean Devin aren't in a position where they have to ask for help or get hurt and need assistance from people who give a shit, like us…(besides welfare I mean)….

There is NO INTEGRITY left in America today – at any level, in any arena or endeavor! Greed is the only American "virtue" and money the only measuring stick.

  45. Joy Benoit Cring

This is now like the 3rd time in the past 6 mths that that I have seen an article written to let people know that this was fake. Obviously, the mockumentary worked or they wouldn't have to keep writing articles on this. Some people need to come on back down to reality and quit thinking that everything they see on TV is real…..besides everyone knows that mermaids don't exist they were killed off ages ago when the giant kracken was released by the Titans, I thought this was common knowledge people, they made a movie and then a remake of that movie just to make sure you were educated on that "fact"………:P

  46. Laura Gordon

I refused to watch this show and have been complaining to Animal Planet recently about their programming……..I'm sick to death of their constant reruns – everything is old and their freakin River Monsters which they show almost constantly anymore! Then as do so many other stations anymore – they bore those of us up in the middle of the night with infomercials – LOL…………..Cable this is one station we might be able to lose if they don't get their you know what together!

  47. Laura Gordon

Nicki Arias darlin………..please use what they're teaching you at Framingham a little better……..you a conservative or something that believes in conspiracies too? Might want to take an English class also!

  48. Anonymous

Terri, I agree, but the damage to intelligent sea life caused by military use of high-powered sonar should have been the focus of the "documentary" – a real issue with real consequences worthy of the public's time and attention!

  49. Marianna Player

We watched it, knew it was fake, kept on watching it, and when it was over we were like… well- there's two hours of our life we'll never get back.

It's always amazing to me that with these new diets for example that people claim to be Lactose intolerant, gluten free, etc; that they don't even know how the digestive system works…Case in point "mermaids". A biological impossibility. I truly feel that people are getting more and more stupid.

  53. Dan Ludington

just freaking awful, effects sucked, acting sucked, photoshop sucked, total garbage.

  54. Bob Stiff

The "scientists" making comments and the over-the-top drama made it clear this was a fake. I'm truly stunned anyone thought it was real. However, Animal Planet seems to have shot themselves in the foot with this one as far as future credibility goes.

  55. Anonymous

Sundance is correct..if they did a story on giant pink slugs everyone would have called it a joke. Now that they found giant pink slugs no one will scoff at them. There is much yet to be discovered on and around our planet.

a lie is still a lie, no matter how much you want to believe it to be real…

  57. Randy Castro

    1. I don't really care. 2. If the government and noaa is keeping this under raps why can't this article be another way to keep it under wraps….3. There was no disclaimer 4. They seem to be twisting words to make it seem as if the story is made up…. 5. Sonar blasting is still hurting and killing marine animals… and bottom line that isn't good

  58. Clem Hooten

Why would a network with credibility chance losing that credibility by producing this ridiculous material? It's fine if that's how they want to market themselves but I always thought of APL as non-fiction. I guess this is their "kardashians". I'm unimpressed. IMHO.

Laura McKenzie Davidson There actually WAS a disclaimer at the beginning and in the end credits but apparently everyone missed it lol. This article even mentions it. "Animal Planet did its best to avoid the controversy this time around by adding a disclaimer before the documentary." This same thing happened LAST YEAR, I don't know how so many people missed out on the HOAX last year and fell for this one.

Oh my this country is doomed. I can't beleve there is anyone of reasonable intelligence that believed those shows were real. Guess what everyone, they found unicorns in North Korea. I wonder when they're going to finally discover the Leprecauns.

  63. Alejandro Velasco

Discovry, then History Channl, and now Animal Planet? Really? Ugh. Animal Planet. Why did sell out like that for sake of ratings? Those supposedly real videos were ALL created with CG, a motion picture creative editing company in Culver City, CA. They were contracted by Animal Planet. Come on peeps. Anyway, Dog Whisperer (Cesar) is my last hope, until one of their dogs starts to talk.

People…. Did you all miss the DISCLAIMER at THE BEGINNING of the program stating CLEARLY that this is FICTIONAL? LMAO. You're asking to be duped if you don't pay attention to things. I loved this mockumentary when the first part aired LAST YEAR. It was controversial then, I don't understand how so many of you missed the hoax last year and fell for this. And c'mon, those were CLEARLY computer generated mermaids LMAO.

  70. Kamell Wafer

I'm not going to go off on a rant and say "Mermaids are absolutely real" I've never seen one you know but if they are real the government isn't going to allow us to know shit like that. Just like if there are aliens and shit the government won't ever admit to their existence the moment it becomes proven fact is the moment shit like idk religion that governments base themselves on go straight out the window. So people are going to do everything in their power to make us feel like its a hoax but I think if you really think you're intelligent you'd realize that maybe more of it is true than what anyone wants you to believe. So don't go judging people for believing it because nobody REALLY knows.

  71. Nora Cecilia Melendez

This epidemic of misinformation, disinformation and complete and utter fabrication of information for simple ratings is insulting. Why don't they just make a movie instead. At least that way some people that will believe anything–might be a tiny bit more skeptical. I didn't see this mermaid thing; but the commercials for it made me want to and also made it seem like the documentary would be based on factual evidence.

stargazer0665 That's rude bro don't say that because Nicki is absolutely right the government hides ALOT of shit from us and some of it rightfully so and this may be one of them we don't know how our government thinks and what they make the call on. Have I seen Mermaids no will I ever see a mermaid probably not do i think there is a chance they exist yea of course I do if you can date all the way back to caveman when these drawings were popping up i dont think these ideas come out of thin air…

Watching that documentary was pretty much the first time I tuned in to animal planet for a long length of time and I assure you all that it will be the last.. cant trust anything you watch on tv anymore which is why my TV set is hardly ever on.

  75. Anonymous

The reason I'd know the video was fake is that the person shooting panned the camera over to the guy standing next to him. If the guy thought he was seeing something weird, he'd be riveted to whatever he's videotaping. I mean, if you thought you were taking footage of a UFO, would you turn the camera on the bozo standing next to you?

  76. Jan Haban

I totally agree. If I want imaginary stories I will watch the Sci Fi channel. This is no better than a sideshow at the circus. Step right up and see the ___ (fill in the blank freak show)… only 10 cents. I guess they made money and that is what is most important to AP. Also reminds me of a kid I went to school with. He needed attention at any cost so he would make up whoppers and watched with perverted delight while the gossip got around. It only made him look like a fool. Nobody believed him any more. Remember the BREAKING NEWS CNN story about finding a dead bigfoot? Ridiculous. Any self-respecting professional would not give such attention to a childish attention-seeking fool. AP has lost my respect. It's all about the "look at me" factor more and more. And the almighty dollar. Forget about integrity. Disgusting.

  77. Kamell Wafer

Regardless of what everyone in here thinks I think Nicki has a point like the government hides plenty of shit from us. I am positive that there is a lot of shit that they don't want us to know. Let's go on a track record people how much fake shit has animal planet actually aired? I think we can all probably say none but as soon as this mermaid video comes up it automatically has to be a hoax? And why? Is there any chance that the government may want us to think its a hoax. I don't know how they work or what they make the damn call on but if it's true I know for a fact that they may not want us to know. Mermaid theories have dated back all the way to caveman drawings any chance they may be real? Probably nobody needs a fucking college degree to tell you that. So don't be rude to someone who is skeptical of our government rather than a documentary.. I have never seen a mermaid and I probably will never see a mermaid but is there a chance they exist I can most definitely say there is and if they are smart like other humans they probably know how to keep theirselves hidden well and anything they cant hide im sure our government would gladly make up for just my theory…

To each his own. But at least keep things in their proper categories. If I buy a book that I found in the Non-Fiction section of the store, then I expect to be reading a true story. If I want to watch a TV show based on fantasy I might tune in to the SciFi channel. But not AP.

The shots were obviously computer animated and the "expert's" on the show sounded like they were trying sell an amazing new blender or something. It was poorly made, even for a fake.

  84. Rich Seeley

This is too funny how so many peopleare butt hurt over a television program. LOL, Animal Planet pulled a fast one and now the gullible are upset becasue they believed it then felt stupid. Instead of laughing it off they point the blame everyone else and lose faith in humanity! LOLOLOLOL "I am so offended blah blah blah", "I am appalled they would do this for ratings"! Thanks for the laughs!

  85. Jackie Bholat

  91. Cruz Coronado

I believe it. Nicki is right. So far it's the only smart comment I've heard. I have my own personal reasons for believing it.

  92. Victor Eaves

Don't be a sheeple. If you had money and a secret that leaked out you'd pay a lot of money to discredit any of the sources that revealed it.

  93. Tim Arvizu

While most people who watched this are able to see it for what it is, some will buy every word. There is never a shortage of gullible fools willing to join the legends of gullible fools already here.

  94. Dan Inman

Devin you obviously care about their opinion or you wouldn't have commented on it. this section is for people to add their opinion even if YOU don't agree with it

  95. Shana Ramsey

I agree with Nicki. Mermaids may not exist now…but they probably did at some point in time. Shit you believe in dinosaurs right. I believe they were probably told to come out and say it was a hoax. If no one cared why would they even take the time to make an announcement. I don't see someone making a public statement after every episode of Ancient Aliens. People are the easiest to sway in whatever direction you want. Well if so and so said it, it must be true. PLEASE!!

  96. Eric Ortega

Whether it is fake or not, there's alot of things in this world that remains undiscovered. I don't care what people say everyone is entitled to their own opinions, I on the other hand am on both sides of the fence here, the first video of the mermaid on the rocks okay I didn't fall for that one but the one of the submarine 3000 feet under the surface! WOW! If it is indeed fake, great job cause I was fooled but if it's not it just fascinates me more. Aliens exists it is just too hard to believe that we are the only living form of life in the entire universe. Yeah I don't think we are. So many things creatures and more that exist not only here on earth but elsewhere in space and beyond. I'm fascinated to know but in order to really know one would have to go and discover those kind of things on their own, so I guess I'll just always wonder, because the government knows what NASA sees in space but of course they don't share that with us, what they see we will probably never ever know!

  97. Lowell Kelley

Devin Runyan Seems you do you ignorant fool!

  98. Lemuel Hunte

Nicki well said. These people believe whatever the government tells them or whatever media tell them. What sense did it make to fabricate all of that? Why did government officials confiscate their property? Those were two Dr.'s; I never knew Dr's were actors. They're Dr.'s in that field, so the lie about them being actors goes out the window. The video shown was from different people, not the same footage taken by one person. Maybe we need to contact those people and see if what they saw was real or if the documentary was fabricated. Maybe people will finally research something before they start to discredit people and things they've seen.

Also, one of the actors was the same one who plays the McCann twins- Don and Dan in those consumer cellular commercials.

Any individual, agency, or organization can pretend to be an authority and state that there is no conclusive evidence that mermaids and mermen are real. However, I choose to contend that they do exist, were hunted by primitive humans who engage in war with any species, including their own, and they retreated to areas of the ocean where no man or vessel can follow them to protect and preserve their species. They did exist and I trust that when humans will learn to be at peace, these relatives will surface and interact with us again. If you watch the documentary closely, you just may choose to agree with the biologists that there is ample evidence that a humanoid species in the ocean lived, hunted, and developed interpersonal relationships with humans for fishing in Asia. You can also choose to believe the disinformation. I commend both Animal Planet and the D channel for airing this documentary. By the way, on Pinterest, the bones of very tall hominids that were found buried on Earth present evidence for alien visitors on our planet. There is ample evidence that aliens have come to and remained on our planet for 450,000 years. Mermaids and mermen are in the same boat of disinformation that aliens have been in with various agencies and governing bodies around the world. But there are too many documented cases to dismiss the proof now. The same will become evident for mermaids and mermen. May you live long enough to know the truth!

gvexed and sundancecatdragon, you may both be pleasantly surprised to learn that this is not 'fake' information. The scientific and tangible proof is valid. There are bone fragments, hunting implements, and photographic validation that mermaids and mermen exist in our oceans and have hunted large prey using their unique weaponry when found in beached whales many decades ago and photographed when it was impossible to alter actual photographs. Be of sound mind and take another look to view the facts. You will find that ample evidence exists to prove that this humanoid species did exist and may well still dwell in our ocean habitat from from warring humans who would attempt to kill them. They may be much smarter than humans and show that they are able to adapt to the environment, including engaging in protective maneuvers to hide their young and protect their species.
