Ashley Todd: political victim or hoax?

Hoax.

You forgot her Twitter tweets were she setup the attack claiming she was now driving in a bad part of town.

The truth of this particular story isn't as much important as the real context behind this shocking story. As a New Yorker, I can remember the dark days of Mayor David Dinkins when select bands of African Americans roamed the streets and crime was at its worst. I am frightened that we may come again to see such unlawfulness on a national scale. I have yet to see Obama address African American crime (or any crime) in any serious manner.

If this girl was attacked and defaced then put the full force of the law down upon the one who did this.

I think its funny so many people are underestimating how stupid criminals are.
she was seen at the ATM without a B on her face minutes before, how would she self inflict those wounds in a matter of minutes then call the police? That seems more fishy to me. I believe it! If she made it up and was looking for her 15 minutes she would have been doing interviews today instead of saying nothing.

Twitter posts mean nothing…she was well connected to the internet so what??? What does that prove?

I don't think the story's true. She may very well have gotten mugged, but I don't think the “B” bit is real in the slightest. The logistics required for someone to have made such a superficial-yet-visible mark on her face WITH A KNIFE while standing at her head is too much. In the dark, too.

My charitable guess? Ashley got mugged. She then decided to turn a bad situation into something “useful”, and decided to introduce partisanship. So she got in her car, scraped a “B” on her cheek with her keys using the rearview mirror, and then filed a fabricated report.

I'm not usually skeptical about this sort of thing, but the mark on her cheek is too perfect to have been done by an attacker in a rush, and it's been done with something that could scratch off a few layers of skin but not draw blood or scar. If you're going to mark someone, you write in angles on their forehead — much better writing surface, and there's a reason those carver-type serial killer fonts are curve-free: it's because curves are impossible, especially on a struggling person's cheek (a cheek's too mushy to draw on).

I'm not buying.

She never showed any “B” until the next day. Having the rest of the night and the next morning is plenty time.

I've got to go with the “smell test” comment, too. I worked in TV news for many years and something's off with this story.

I'll guarantee the physical attack is a hoax. And I wouldn't be surprised if the mugging turned out to be a hoax, too. Maybe she heard about an earlier mugging in the area and gave police the same description she read about.

But seriously – that B? Even if the guy did it backward… even if he made it shallow… why is it so perfect looking? How on earth did he get her to hold completely still until he was done cutting a perfect “B” into her face?

Maybe she thought the “B” would make everyone think of Barack Obama… but all I think of is Bullsh*t.

Well, I am definitely outraged…. that a blogger doesn't know how to spell “Pittsburgh”… Note the “H” on the end, Mr. Webster.

There are comments in the local (to her) paper, where residents are writing in, saying, “What? This isn't a bad neighborhood, there are restaurants and bars all around, there are people walking and window shopping at that hour…” Locals all believe that it's a hoax, that if anyone did dare to pull a robbery, it would have to be wham-bam, and gone. Think of how long she'd have been screaming while such a nice “B” was being so gently and considerately shallowly carved. It's a “middle class Italian neighborhood”.

Not only was the mirror image of a “B” done by her in the… mirror, her black eye doesn't even look real. Her black eye doesn't have the purple surrounded by red, and tinged with yellow of a real bruise. It also doesn't have the slightest bit of swelling to it, her cheeks do, but she never said the assailant made her fat. Her eye is all grey scale tones, like cosmetics. She looks half goth, not beaten.
The only crime that's sometimes not reported, or reported days later, is rape, and understandably so. For a crime like this, why did she wait a day to report it? Why did she basically say, “I'm not familiar with the area, so I forgot my left and right, and can't say where he went… (but my friend lives around the corner).” If you're a victim of a violent crime you report it right away, you go to the hospital, you get your injuries documented as evidence, in case the assailant is caught, and to make sure you don't have a concussion that can swell into a worse injury.
However, she doesn't want her injuries verified or documented, because she knows her black eye will wash off, and that there's no assailant to catch.
Let us not forget the lesson we learned from Morton Downey Jr, and the “skinhead assault”.

I frequent Bloomfield all the time. I don't want to say this didn't happen but it's a fairly busy street. There's a bar a half block down. A coffee shop about a block and a half away. I walked by the ATM tonight at 9:20 and there were tons of people nearby. Of course it's probably the most popular ATM in town today. It is possible she could have been attacked on the side street which is pretty dark. Either way, I feel sorry for the kid.

Doesn't look like a knife made the B. If it was, it would be a deeper cut and we would see some coagulated blood and scabbing already there. This looks like it was scratched on. If the photo is flipped, it would account for the backwards B. As a professional special-effects film makeup artist, I question the color of the black eyes. Usually one would see some red and yellow and purple in real bruising and maybe even some bruising in the whites of her eyes. It almost looks like black powder or eyeshadow under the eye. Sorry, just my professional observations. The story seems suspicious.

Hey, there are towns of “Pittsburg” in California, New Hamshire, Kansas, Texas, and Pittsburg County in Oklahoma. You can't get outraged at someone else because all of Pennsyvania can't spell it correctly.

Where does it say that? I haven't seen any coverage that claims that.

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

Ok, I've been reading more. This “happened” on a Wednesday night, but the police didn't make statements about it until Thursday. Also, pictures didn't appear for a day, she didn't let the police (get a chance to?) photograph her. Those two things may have thrown me off.
Now, the time line from several sources is that she was “attacked”, and then went to a friend's house nearby, then went back to the ATM location 45 minutes later, and reported it then. So, eye makeup and a safety pin scratch can be done in that time. It was NOT immediately reported. Also, why leave, go to a friend's house for safety, not call the police, but then go back to the scene of the crime (in full costume), and then call the police?
She told police the man came up behind her at the ATM, the ATM camera does not agree. She's getting polygraphed now, and if they wash her face while they do it, it'll clear this all up.

I agree that there are some squirrelly things here. I was a tiny bit cautious before I even read the stuff Malkin wrote about it not passing the smell test.

It's unfortunate, because this is going to be needlessly damaging to a lot of folks on both sides. Something like this happening is not outside the realm of possibility (vandalism on both sides of the aisle has been rampant so far), but concocting hoaxes like this just creates a needless sideshow.

I don't know about the rest of the story, but that's a 5th grade Halloween costume of a black eye. Real black eyes are swollen and red… shiny.

I live a few blocks from where this happened, and there are people everywhere at that time of night. There is no way that this went on for five to ten minutes without some one encountering an apparently unhinged dyslexic hulking black man carving letters into a girls face. Also, the B looks totally self inflicted, like something a teenage girl would do for attention.

What about the bank camera footage? wouldn't it show the attack? why did the guy write it backwards? It was like he was looking in a mirror when he did it. You usually dont expect that drug using robbers are that politically savvy.

It's a hoax all the way. Not only is the B backwards (which makes no sense), but the “black eye” is fake too. Look closely, there's no broken blood vessels at all in the eye, and it's not even swollen. It looks like cheap Halloween makeup. How strange that she just happens to be a McCain worker. Come on sheeple!

Latest attempt to scare white Americans into not voting for Obama. Apparently she also politely held still for the carving since the guy managed fairly nice, round curves on the letter. What a gal. Oh, and that “black eye” is healing up nice and quick too. No puffiness at all for such a recent brutal attack. She must heal quickly…

Scariest of all is that Obama will probably lose several thousand votes because people will believe the story…which, even if it were true, has nothing to do with the man who would be president.

I'm sorry to seem like a nitpicker, but isn't “smart racist” an oxymoron?

Defaced? Isn't that an odd way to describe it? If there had been no photo, that description might tend to cause some people to think that her face had been removed. I think that the word “mutilated” might be more appropriate. How ' bout “scarred”? Of course, we'll have to wait to see if the injury will even leave a scar, but you get the picture.

And there should be no question about it: If the alleged perpetrator can be apprehended, the Grey Bar Hotel should be his next residence.

However, if the “victim” isn't really a victim, and has been pulling a hoax, what should the action be? Must she, too, feel the full force of the law?

Well, if we're to believe what we hear from FOX News, I guess that McCain supporters should take a deep breath and relax. Then they can practice saying “President Obama.”

Todd, who is white, told police she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night. She now can't explain why she invented the story, Bryant said.
Todd also told police she believes she cut the backward “B” onto her own cheek, but she didn't explain how or why, Bryant said.

Then you haven't been paying attention. Obama has talked many times on the subject of african american crime rates, african american single parent familes and responsibilities and general social responsibilities of african americans. I don't even live in the USA and I've heard about this stuff. His attitude towards it was praised by the conservative party here in the UK a couple of months ago. You need to do some research before forming such an extreme opinion
