CollegeWikis Wants to Revolutionize Scholastic Communication

A wiki-style information site geared specifically toward college students is working to change the face of education communication — and now, it has extra cash to make it happen. CollegeWikis announced $2 million in new funding this morning.

CollegeWikis is careful to attest that it’s an “information resource” — not a “social network.” The site lets students join groups created for classes, dorms, or other school-related entities, then participate in online discussions with other members. Each discussion, though, is wiki-editable — with the goal of it becoming a long-term resource for other students in similar situations down the road. Topics include everything from admission tips to link-friendly terms such as “how to survive freshman year.”

A former Stanford student started the site last year based his own dissatisfaction with a class-based e-mail list. CollegeWikis now claims 50,000 student users from more than 200 different colleges.
