Mom Gets Banned From Facebook For Posting Breastfeeding Photo, Plots Revenge [Photo]
Gina Crosley-Corcoran, a blogger at TheFeministBreeder.com, was banned from Facebook for uploading a picture of her 18-month-old nursing — and holding a piece of bacon.
Crosley-Corcoran wrote:
“And now, you’ve seen everything: Jolene swiped bacon off my plate and tried to nurse and eat at the same time. When I got bit, I told her she had to choose. She chose bacon.
”
Crosley-Corcoran said the photo was generally well-received, but one commenter wrote, “Those are the kids that end up growing up to be sex offenders.” She took a screenshot of the comment and posted it to her blog, and the commenter reported her to Facebook.
Two days later, the photo was removed for being “inappropriate” and Crosley-Corcoran was suspended from the social networking site for three days.
Crosley-Corcoran isn’t the first mother to be suspended from Facebook for posting breastfeeding photos. Emma Kwasnica, a mother of three, was suspended in January after posting over 200 photos of herself breastfeeding.
A Facebook representative told the Huffington Post:
“We agree that breastfeeding is natural and we are very glad to know that it is important for mothers, including the many mothers who work at Facebook, to share their experience with others on the site. The vast majority of breastfeeding photos are compliant with our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities and Facebook takes no action on such content. However, photos which contain a fully exposed breast, do violate our terms and may be removed if they are reported to us.”
Aftter Kwasnica spoke with Facebook and felt the issue hadn’t been fixed, she organized a protest outside of the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Over 60 mothers and their babies gathered at the headquarters to convince the social networking site that breastfeeding photos were not obscene.
While Crosley-Corcoran isn’t planning to fight Facebook offline, she is plotting her revenge. She is encouraging readers to join her in protesting by posting breastfeeding photos on their Facebook pages. She wrote on her blog:
“Share this far and wide. Grab that picture and upload/share it to your OWN facebook [sic] page in protest… Tell facebook [sic] they’re not even following their OWN rules about breastfeeding photos.”
Crosley-Corcoran is also planning to “flood” Facebook with as many breastfeeding photos as possible over 72 hours. She wrote on her blog that her mission was to normalize breastfeeding on Facebook.
Do you think Gina Crosley-Corcoran’s photo was inappropriate, and should her Facebook account have been suspended?

I think the bacon was absurd

I think people need to remember that Facebook is a business not a free speech platform. Stupid people do stupid things.

Disagree. It's a social platform. Saw nothing wrong with her breastfeeding photo. If someone at FB thinks that's porn, they are the ones with a problem.

I don't disagree with the photo either, but her reaction to the matter is overboard. Facebook isn't an entitlement zone.

I'm more concerned with the fact she's still feeding an 18 month old. This attachment parenting thing is pretty strange. Can't wait to live in the world run by these kids.

Attachment parenting has been going on for thousands of years. I'm sure that some of 'these kids' are already running the world. It is normal human behavior and child development to breastfeed to beyond 2 years. It's just that as a culture, a lot of us disapprove.
As for the picture-I think it's hilarious. I love it, especially the comment about choosing the bacon.

Facebook is disgusting. I know a lot of moms who have had this problem. However, when I asked FB to take down a soft porn picture someone posted, FB told me art was in the eye of the beholder. Can't make this stuff up.

I think it's a great thing what she did, breastfeeding is 100% natural, it is the way we're intended to be fed and nurtured as infants! It shouldn't be made out to be something that is obscene or wrong, and I mean come on, everyone knows what tits look like and every woman has them get over some boob in a picture. You see worse in magazines.

I'm all for breastfeeding, breastfed both my boys, but when they can steal bacon off your plate and choose it over the boob, it's time to wean. Docs say 15 months is about the limit for health benefits anyway. When your kid can lift up your shirt to help themselves, they can get a cup of milk from the fridge.

not inappropriate unless you refrain from eating pork due to religion.

Yeah.. The whole "it's perfectly natural" argument seems a bit flawed to me. One could argue that something such as urination or masturbation are also completely natural, yet not many people do these things in public. Not without risk of being arrested anyway.

If you are out in public with a baby and they are hungry you can't rush home and feed them. Most people have blankets and cover the babies head during the process. I see no reason why that should offend anyone.

Carla Keeler Breastfeeding is completely natural, I agree. Being a guy, I feel it is rather awkward to be around a woman who is breastfeeding, but I don't think it is wrong. It's a breast.. The whole purpose is for feeding an infant. If people werren't so sick minded and didn't think about sex all day, they wouldn't get aroused from seeing a mother feeding their child. Sheesh, society.

Old enough for bacon to old for BooBs!

Okay as a mom I never posted myself feeding my baby! And I agree with a person who breasting feeding at 18mos in dumb. By that age they have teeth. I tired of people talking down those don't breastfeed but yet get offended when people say things about them breastfeeding in public.
